So i've realised that in alot of online multiplayer games, hosts will kick new players off if they are new players, or if they make the most simple of errors.

The elitists that play these games 24/7 are fine if they want to have a challenge, but are their attitudes killing their pool of potential players to play against?

It's hard to get going in a game, with all the abuse that is said in general. I wonder what other peoples experiences have been with various multiplayer games?

The stupid thing in my case, is that i've been average (acceptable) consistantly in alot of games, but these elitists still have a go.

... another reason why I never play MP games, ever. I believe Blizzard has pretty much nailed all the issues with battlenet, tho.

I'm basically resigned to never playing online multiplayer; I'm not great at most games, and why would I want to spend my spare time getting screamed at?

I hate multiplayer these days for the lack of true teamwork which everyone says Battlefield 3 pc promises to be, and no I do not want to play league of legends not interested.

Depends on the game, and the options that it provides. Most competitive games take care of this problem by introducing you to players that are near your skill (statistically) (example, StarCraft 2, LoL, Dota 2). Some provide different levels of difficulty that you can select (higher difficulty players expect that you're not a n00b and will kick you if you are) (examples, WoW (three raiding difficulties), Left 4 Dead (4 difficulties, iirc)).

Find a friendly guild/clan/etc. Most popular games have groups where non-elitist players meet.

I tend to avoid the elitists as well. The single-mindedness that I'm seeing there is absurd and hilarious. Here's a funny story:

When Guild Wars was new, lots of people believed that Necromancers were useless, unless they adhered to one of two "accepted" builds. I played a Necromancer, and don't read much about "accepted" builds, I like to find things out on my own. Now, there was a supposedly very difficult mission, and I saw a team being assembled. I joined, and was asked what my specialization was. I answered, and was booted immediately out of the group, because I ran an "unpopular" build. I wasn't even given time to explain why I considered this specific build to be a good fit for this specific mission.

I then thought "fsck it", and solo'ed the mission with henchmen, who at that time were considered equally useless as the build I was running.

Funnily enough, my build resurfaced two years later as one of the recommended builds for that mission.

I hardly ever play MP. Very, very rarely. But when I do I just about always had good experiences. Most recent example would be ME 3 (although that was coop).

Whether in a cooperative game or a competitive game, I've given up on playing with strangers. It's a waste of my time.

And thats why I dont play Dota 2.

hehe, I can't say, I've never actually played on it. I mean, the modern one. But I hear good things about how it handles stuff.

play some dota2 and see all the nice people in there, if the team is loosing 90% of the talk is "noob, stupid team, gay feeder, stop feeding stupid russian noob", and the occasional russian screaming something in anger in the microphone. I don't know if that game brings out the worse in people or it just attracts horrible people

I used to play a lot of multiplayer. It was genuinely fun. Nowadays, kids are just too competitive.
People kicking me from a server for doing well in a match? Grow up.

There's not much fun in it anymore.

I prefer team-based multiplayer games where it doesn't matter that much even if you are n00b. You can still participate by helping the better players, and learn the ropes that way.

I think the TeamFortress games fit the bill. If you are a newbie, just mostly stay in your home base, trying to help killing the incoming flag catchers and guarding your team's flag. When you get better, get out of the base to assault the enemy base. Four newbies guarding the flag room can probably hold their own against the occasional one or two elite enemy players, or the very least inform others of the incoming enemies. Everyone can feel useful, from newbies to elite players.

I dislike online games which try to restrict you to servers with other people with "similar" skills. It sounds too much like Sega Rally where the computer cars would intentionally slow down if you were not doing good, and start driving extraordinarily good if you did too.

I only play one multiplayer game and that's World of Tanks...

and I must say that the community in there is quite nice, the system is build for you to get better step by step without having much effect on the final victory/defeat. well, of course there are sometimes people who will tell you you're noob, but that happened to me like 4 times in over 1000 games...
