Either way, the overall art design isn't all that attractive to begin with, and with today's animation standards the game becomes downright hideous to look at.
Anachronox was a heavily modified Quake 2 engine, and you're probably thinking of that. It looked ok at the time, but the engine was way past its sell-by date at that point. Deus Ex used the Unreal engine, which was still current-gen at the time.
