TheJoe: Deus Ex.

It sits on my shelf, unplayed and neglected. Sometimes, at night, I think I can hear it weep silently.

Drelmanes: Do you know if Deus Ex: The Conspiracy for PS2 is good?

A friend of mine had this version. It's the same game, as far as I know, but simplified in some ways for console play (for example, your inventory is just a list of items, instead of a drag-and-drop grid). Obviously, it doesn't look, play or control as nicely as it does on PC, either.

TheJoe: Deus Ex.

Played it, replayed it and played it again some more.
Hmm, it has been a few years since I played it again: maybe I should reinstall it.

It does have better lighting and nicer cutscenes. Yes it was dumbed down a little to make it console friendly but the core game remains unchanged so as console ports go it's one of the better ones.
I agree that it's a slightly overrated game, at least story-wise, where it is laughable. Overall gameplay, on the other hand, is excellent. Sure, it's difficult and stat-dependent, but there is not a part of the game that isn't true to the game's overarching design: player freedom.
Despite being a linear game, Deus Ex outshines many, if not all, games when it comes to offering choices to the player at all turns, and making them meaningful. Both level and story design is flexible, and at no point in the game are you forced to solve a problem in a specific way. There are no wrong choices to make - the story will unfold regardless of how you perform in your tasks, and it will adapt dynamically to your failures.
Perhaps it is this staggering amount of freedom - and the acknowledgement that your actions thus have consequences - that people find creates a good story.
EDIT: I kept stumbling with the grammar when writing this, so it took almost an hour to write. Meh. Elf needs food badly.

Does it? I didn't think it looked very good. The textures were a bit dirty, as I recall, and the frame rate could have been better. I didn't sit there for hours looking at it, though.
Only a few subjects have given me the results I was expecting, so far.

Swings and roundabouts. The lighting was better because it's easy to do on the PS2 without impacting performance. Textures took a bad hit and some levels were re-designed to cope with the lower memory of the console. As it stands though it is still the same game so for people who didn't have a PC at the time it was acceptable enough.
