I like the idea that somebody posted that a lot of writing is basically just fan fiction.

I write, but I usually end up doing parodies of the things I like, because even if I like something, I always end up finding ways to make fun of it. :-)

I wasn't satisfied with how American Horror Story Season 1 ended so I have been thinking of writing a fan fiction extended ending of what the Harmon Family get up to and the new people they get in contact with.

Writing one myself, so it is only natural that I enjoy fanfiction works. There is a couple of them that I would recommend.


Fanfiction Downloader
Not a actual fanfiction, but it is a useful tool if you want to download a copy of a story and to convert it into .pdf format. This is quite handy for me, so I thought to mention it.


Megaman: Guiding Rainbow's Light
This one acts as a precursor to the Megaman series, explaining how various technologies in the games like treeborgs have come into existence. As such, the focus isn't on robot characters, but on Dr. Light and Dr. Wily before things went wrong. It should be noted that this fanfiction could be considered a part of the Legacy of Metal series, in which various authors cover one or more Megaman games and then connect their lore together. I consider Guiding Rainbow's Light to be very good at presenting the human characters, and really enjoyed the world building.


X-COM: Enemy Unknown (PDF)
While not as good when compared to Guiding Rainbow's Light, it is a pretty nice and lengthy take on the original X-COM. It captures the feel of the game quite nicely, but also has elements of the X-Files and other conspiracy theory material.

Fallout: Equestria
What do you get when you put techni-colour ponies, megaspells, and the future in a blender? Fallout of the Equine kind. I think this fanfiction is one of the best representatives when it comes to merging two fandoms together, as the story is able to capture how Equestria fell from what we knew in the show into a desolate wasteland. This actually evokes the atmosphere of the Fallout series just right, that I can safely say that it can stand next to Fallout 2 and New Vegas with pride.

Ellora the Archer
This is probably one of the earlier Let's Plays that have been done, so I consider it an archaelogical piece of sorts. This one follows Ellora, an archer who has entered the Mazes of Menace. I couldn't find any places to download the .pdf, so I uploaded it for your reading pleasure.

I checked some out, back in the day, when I worked on an office and I didn't feel like actually working. Mostly manga related, but some game based too. I specially recall liking a Legacy of Kain one, but can't remember it's title. Some of them are great, but finding the good stuff is so hard it's simply not woth it for me.

You could also say that of mythology, actually. Even though the frontier between litterature and mythology is, there again, unclear.

For instance, see the Perceval , or Fénelon's [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Aventures_de_T%C3%A9l%C3%A9maque]Adventures of Telemachus (that philosopher David Hume described as the shittiest fanfiction ever).

Kind of like with all the other forms of entertainment media. The best way to find them is to ask a few people.
Huh, and here I thought this title was already taken by the New Testament :-P

I don't mind fan-fiction but I rarely read them because I feel something is off about them and I can't connect with it. Characters think and act differently, overall mood is shifted, etc.
You can find a crap through official distributing channels too, there are simply good and bad fiction stories. It depends a lot on author's writing skills but a fanfic writer also has to have the ability to catch a majority of traits of original to succeed (at least in my case).

Well, yes, but I found fanfics specially irksome. Partially because nobody was there for me to ask, but also because I find it very hard to (properly) judge a book by it's cover. And covers were all I got when browsing fanfics.

I used to dislike the stuff, but as the years have passed and I've found better quality stuff, I've neded up becaoming part of a few fan-fic productions in different media (some ongoing) and have found it's the fans who more often than not can bring life to an ailing licence ravaged by pushy money grubbing publishers or lax developers.

On the other hand you get some right old gompers of fan fiction too!

I'm fine with unauthorized stories, but the byproduct of "fandom" is shit. A good unauthorized story wouldn't be classified as fanfiction; it will be copyright infringement and the execs will stand up and notice.
