This might have already been brought up, but I feel a little bit spoiled by the Steam client. My games are at hand, I can go look at and download games from my library and importantly of all, keep a list of friends and chat with them.
I was wondering if GOG was considering making an optional application for download that serves as a download, a portal to GOG itself/its community and a friends list function.

I'm hoping a big part of that is resolved when/if the site goes out of beta and we get member profiles and messaging. With a friend system and the possibility to see each other's wishlist so you can gift stuff to your friends etc.

It may not be needed, but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing something like this. I've always appreciated the collector's and community aspects of the Steam interface. As you say, if such a thing were to surface, it should be entirely optional. It might be nice to have the store, the games and your friends who play them are all at hand.
Still, if GOG doesn't have the staff, then I'd prefer them to focus on improving game compatibility, and bringing us new old titles.

If they don't, then perhaps we could lobby for permission to take up development as a community project (with some documentation and such).
It would probably be better just to expand the capabilities of the GOG site itself rather than creating another needless client. After all it's not like you're going to get a Steam-like in game overlay and achievements and the like. It's not ever going to serve an actual purpose.
If GOG had more social networking features, such as IM, chat and more user page customisation. The ability to view others' pages would be nice too. Perhaps groups and a friends feature when GOG's community grows. That kind of thing. You don't need a client for that.

I second this. Although I like the minimalistic feel of the forums, bus some added options will not be frowned upon.

The simplest solution is to add your GOG games as shortcuts within Steam and then join the GOG group on Steam. You can't download your GOG games through Steam, but you'll get quick access to all your installed games plus the friends/chat features you want. No need for GOG to waste time and resources on an optional client that most of us don't want anyway.

If there was one thing I'd change about the forums it's the addition of reply nesting. That wouldn't just work a lot better, but also solve the problems with the quoting system by bypassing that altogether.
