Andy_Panthro: According to wikipedia, the three top video game publishers (all platforms) are Nintendo, EA and Actiblizzard.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_publisher#Selected_video_game_publishers

That list is more about what game publishers are the best to work with from the game developer's perspective, rather than the biggest publishers.
I actually agree with Atari being likely. They're in serious, serious trouble financially (Don't believe me? Okay...off the top of your head name 3 Atari games that sold worth a crap, or were any good, in the last 2-3 years. Also, they farmed off their entire European arm to Namco Bandai, and they sold their Asian distribution wing as well. They now can't even offer global publishing to developers. And they didn't show up at last year's E3...they had nothing to show, and rumors were they were flat broke.) and could probably use some revenue from their back catalog.
That's mainly because Infogrames was in very bad shape financially speaking when they acquired the Atari company (which was in even worse position). They are doing slightly better nowadays than they were before (when I got laid off heh but that's another story) but they still are in big troubles indeed.

Hmm...that explains the PS:T rerelease...

Get em while they're down! ;)

Wishbone: Well, from a GOG perspective, it doesn't really matter what or how much they publish these days. What matters is the number of old IPs they possess.

I don't disagree with that. I just disagree with calling them one of the big three, because they're actually quite small and have very little left but some MMOs and their old IPs (many of which have been sold off as well, including a lot of the MicroProse-stuff). They're a bit like Interplay, really. Only with fewer lawsuits and more expensive executives.
So yeah, big news for GOG, surely (especially if they get some D&D-games onboard through this). And it's not entirely unlikely. But we'll see.

cogadh: It still doesn't change the fact that Atari, like EA and Activision, has one of the longest histories and largest libraries in the gaming industry.

Arghlll, not again ... :)
The actual company "Atari" called itself "Infogrames" a few years ago. Atari was only a shell, a name, a brand, nothing more. In 2001 Infogrames bought this name and called itself Atari from then on. Infogrames was a big publisher in Europe, but comparing them to EA or Activisions history, even only the PC plattform, no, please :)
Hehe, I think I and a few others know who it is but we'll keep silent until then to not spoil the surprise and not look like total douches if it turns out we were wrong.
But if we're right, IT IS BIG!

nawid: Oh god, please be Activision Blizzard. The complete first Starcraft for $10, mmmm. Diablo 2 complete for the same. No One Lives Forever games.

i don't think it's blizzard. they have their own digital distribution

That sort of sounds like you're pulling info out of your arse like the rest of us but aren't willing to say what it is now so you can say you were right later. Good tactic

I'mma try another one instead. Instead of my arse I'll pull it out of my ear - eww, what's that, how did that get in here?!
So which publisher did the magic earwax coccoon contain?
Its kind of like a bitter and squishy fortune cookie

Something tells me that it's going to be Activision/Blizzard.

Kiss goodbye to reasonable prices on GOG then. Call of Duty $14.99 hell lets introduce regional pricing as well to make Bobby happy. $14.99, £14.99 and €19.99.
Well that makes a degree of sense when you consider the re-release of COD1 as an extra for the console versions of COD4.2 but its sort of countered by the fact that its activision... Unless they have a secretive 5th column of intelligent and sensible business people who are concerned with selling games rather than the dark rituals involved in elevating kotick to the post of the lord of the 9th circle of Baator, it seems unlikely
