Zeewolf: I honestly don't know who's next on the list after Activision and EA. Could be Square Enix.

AlexY: It's so weird to say Square Enix now instead of Eidos. So weird.

It's even weirder if you say "Squeenix", but if you like you could go with "Squeendos".
Oh, if it does turn out to be EA I'd be surprised but very happy.

Heh, yeah. But Square Enix was a lot larger than Eidos before the acquisition as well.

Not a chance. They were a developer, not a publisher. Their two most popular games, Arcanum and Vampire are owned by Activision, while Temple of Elemental Evil is owned by Atari.

Zeewolf: Atari? They're nothing. They've sold off virtually everything, and betting the company's future on the MMO-genre. But, like Interplay, they have a vast back-catalogue, so they'd be very interesting for GOG.
I honestly don't know who's next on the list after Activision and EA. Could be Square Enix.[

I would still call Atari one of the three bigs. They may have gotten out of developing anything other than MMOs (thanks to buying Cryptic), but they still publish all kinds of games. Between all the different studios and IPs the company has absorbed over the years, and now its partial ownership by Namco Bandai, Atari has access to an enormous library of published games that easily places it among the top three publishers in the business.
There are a lot of ways to measure the top three in game publishing.
1) Revenue, Atari is probably in the Top 10, I doubt it's in the Top 3
2) IP's, Atari is probably in the Top 5. They have sold off a few properties in the last few years.
3) Quality games, Atari is, well, not in the Top 10 for this.
4) Profits, are they making a profit yet? I don't know myself.
After all of this, I still think Atari is the most likely candidate. The majority of their properties fit in perfectly with GOG.

Activision + shitloads of work on patching the games up = not likely at all. Not impossible but it would take a lot to bring those games up to GOG's standards.

Well, you could call them that, but... you'd be wrong. They're tiny. :-)
They don't even publish games in Europe any more, Namco Bandai took over their entire publishing business.
According to wikipedia, the three top video game publishers (all platforms) are Nintendo, EA and Actiblizzard.

Which would make the top 3 publishers with PC games EA, Actiblizzard, and Ubisoft.

Bethesda at 7th? O.o
I hope the big one is EA, but I still think the first coming is an Atari announcement.

Well, from a GOG perspective, it doesn't really matter what or how much they publish these days. What matters is the number of old IPs they possess.

I'm really hoping for Atari. I want to collect all of the Infinity Engine games and try running them under Gemrb (the Infinity Engine clone). I've never played the Baldur's Gate games. I did play both Icewind Dale games and have started on Planescape: Toment.
So, the Atari D&D games would be an excellent addition to the catalog.

It still doesn't change the fact that Atari, like EA and Activision, has one of the longest histories and largest libraries in the gaming industry. When you think of the big publishers in the entire history of PC gaming (not just what they are today), the top three have to be EA, Activision and Atari; they are the only ones that have been here since the beginning and are still around. None of them are the same company they were at the beginning, but they all still have plenty to offer GOG. However, if you look at who is more likely to get involved with GOG, we all know Kotick's ActiBlizzard will never settle for the pricing scheme, EA has been softening to the whole DRM thing and has had some financial issues of late, so they have potential, but who is a shadow of its former self, is desperate for revenue and only has its old library to offer as a means of producing capital? Atari. Strictly from that perspective alone, despite the fact that I really want it to be LucasArts, I'd have to put my money on Atari coming to GOG.
