monkeydelarge: The Crusades happened because a Pope wanted Christians to take the "holy land" and kill all the non Christians.
Krypsyn: That was, indeed, the stated reason. However, the Crusades were mainly fought to fill the Papacy's coffers and confer upon it continued secular relevance. Actually, the riches being plundered from the 'holy land' is what made the Knights Templar a thing (since they ran the banking system, if one can call it that, that revolved around the looting). Amusingly, it was the Inquisition that finally put the Knights Templar down after they got too big for their britches. It is all medieval politics, at its base. ;) BuzzLightyear2

monkeydelarge: I know. All that wealth in the hands of the Knights Templar is why they were destroyed. A French King got jealous and wanted their wealth for himself. So then, all of a sudden, the Knights Templar were accused of being a cult of devil worshipers and every member was imprisoned, tortured and killed. Some just killed, like their leader Jacques de Molay. But the French King underestimated Jacques de Molay. Krypsyn

monkeydelarge: Yeah, what a jealous asshat. During those days, unfortunately, people used the ignorance that goes hand in hand with Christianity to get people put to death and then take their stuff. TerriblePurpose

The pope declared them* innocent of heresy, but they were still found to be guilty of other charges (related to the practices of initiation into the Templar order). *It was actually de Molay that was on trial.
Interestingly, the story is that de Molay cursed the king and the pope when he was burning at the stake (If memory serves, the king decided to burn him despite the dismissal of the heresy charge), saying they would be dead within a year. One died within a month and the other within two months. Kind of a cool story, if one ignores the gruesome injustice of it.

It was the Inquisition at the behest of the French King the brought the Templars down. From the wiki After more bullying from Philip, Pope Clement then issued the papal bull Pastoralis Praeeminentiae on 22 November 1307, which instructed all Christian monarchs in Europe to arrest all Templars and seize their assets.[36] Pope Clement called for papal hearings to determine the Templars' guilt or innocence, and once freed of the Inquisitors' torture, many Templars recanted their confessions. Some had sufficient legal experience to defend themselves in the trials, but in 1310 Philip blocked this attempt, using the previously forced confessions to have dozens of Templars burned at the stake in Paris.

Conrad57: Why would you think extraterrestrials exist if there's no evidence for them? Oh, because you imagine that there's a chance. When looking at the "fine-tuning of the universe, " the balance is so UN-likely and yet you don't see a chance that God exists? My better-spoken-"friend" is right. You do contradict yourself.
I'm going to accuse you. You don't believe in God because it means that he's above you [...]
As to extraterrestrials - the explaination is in my previous post. I'm going to accuse you. You don't believe in God because it means that he's above you [...]
As to the accusation - that is not true. I would actually prefer to believe in god. Being an atheist really isnt so dandy. Do you know what happens when I die ? I rot. There is nothing. Do you think that is a nice perspective?
I believe that there is no higher being, no higher purpose. Do you think that is a nice perspective? Oh, how nice would it be that there is a god, and everything really has a deeper sense, purpose, its part of gods genious plan.
I've tried to convince myself numerous time to believe in it, but I cant. How can I, having no basis for such a belief.
So extraterrestrials arent really a contradiction. I know that it has happened once, there is hard evidence of life on earth ;]
So I am absolutely certain that life is possible. I have a basis, which combined with the size of the universe, imo makes it higly likely that extraterrestrials exist. Thats not to say, that we'll ever come in contact with them, I have no idea.
After all, the observable universe is huge, and there is much more beyond that, and our technology doesnt even enable us to explore our own galaxy (only to an extremely small degree). Even reaching speed of light wouldnt help much, the universe is that big.

I'm pretty sure it was just the heresy charge. I was actually watching a program on tv today that dealt with this. Alas, I was only half paying attention. Aye, that's why I said 'the story is...' ;)

Conrad57: You're flaunting your ignorance of the Bible and Christianity again.
Unlike when Jesus resurrected other people (e.g. Lazarus), he came in his "resurrected" body, that is, a re-made, so-called "glorified" body. That resurrection is not the same as using the shock paddles to help someone after they die with a heard attack and "bringing them back." No, it's a whole different event. He is called the "first born" of the resurrected for it, too. You didn't understand the categorical difference. Again, you would have to actually learn the Bible to have understood that.
pimpmonkey2382: One question, how the fuck do you know? Unlike when Jesus resurrected other people (e.g. Lazarus), he came in his "resurrected" body, that is, a re-made, so-called "glorified" body. That resurrection is not the same as using the shock paddles to help someone after they die with a heard attack and "bringing them back." No, it's a whole different event. Make sure you're about to argue something that any evidence is permitted except the testimonies presented in the Bible. That's intellectually dishonest. That's like someone saying to prove evolution but you're not allowed to refer to fossil evidence or genetics (old and new testaments).
However, I haven't finished responding yet to your earlier straw-man accusations. Yes, you made straw-man arguments by accusations within questions. Also, I must leave for the gym in a few minutes, so I won't be here to finish up with you. Sorry.
I do understand how much you have your head in the sand. See, you used that cliche, but the cliche is about deliberate ignorance, the thing you participated in when you said you wouldn't look at anything I'd give reference to. So, really, while some might say that conversing with you is worthless endeavor, being able to publicly explain these things for other to read is not a worthless endeavor. THanks for the opportunity. You've demonstrated multiple fallacies that are useful to call out. If you refuse to examine the things I would present, then you don't have the basis to critique.
I've been on 2 threads at once and repeatedly accidentally erased unfinished responses by hitting reply in the other thread. That's why a few things didnt' get answered yet. Sorry.
Ok, gotta get to the gym. G'Night.
