Instead, we tell them the tyrannical desert gods aren't real and they should have no effect on our morality, on how we treat our fellow man.

Soyeong: Have you even read the Bible?

Atheism is the best way to altruism. Religion is the fastest way to injustice and cruelty.

I feel like masturbating now. ;)

I am not going to bother delving into other situations, but since when was the Spanish Inquisition justice? I am not trying to be rude or condemn your beliefs, but I am curious how anyone could consider that mess as justice in any way, shape or form.

Fenixp: I know we're running a bit of a circle here, but I have the same basis for my beliefs as the other guy. I consider a person trying to change my beliefs even in spite of voicing my wish for him to not do so incredibly inpolite and, quite frankly, insulting. Comparison to the car accident is not quite the same thing, because you can actually offer me empirical evidence of high chances of me dying or severely hurting myself, which is where that stops being a word against a word.
My point was that if someone was heading into danger that you were aware of, but which they were unaware, then the respectable thing would be to warn them of the danger and try to convince them not continue down that path. If they didn't didn't want to listen to your advice, then I agree with you that it would be incredibly impolite to continue to try to change their mind.

I think you're free to now want anyone to try to change your beliefs, but your respect should go to the one who thought you were heading into danger unaware and tried to warn you rather than the one who thought you heading into danger unaware and didn't bother to try to warn you.

That's true, which is why it is important to carefully examine the evidence.

Which is none, for any religion.

I remember some years back when I was thinking up ideas for this custom RPG P&P rules/adventure, that their would be "atheists" in an otherwise fantasy setting. The idea being that "gods" and magic existed kinda like The Warp in Warhammer, ie the Gods exist because people believe in them, and that gives them strength. So if no-one believed in Gods and magic, it simply wouldn't exist.

But "atheists" would be able to disbelieve spells and curses because they simply don't believe, giving them insanely high magic resistance, but the inability to use anything magical.

Sounds like stupid in retrospect I guess, too many Discworld novels for me.

Well... I'm sure someone has thought up worse ideas for a p&p adventure...
