My dad loves mysteries and turned me on to Agatha Cristie's works thanks to PBS' Masterpiece Mystery series, starting with Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. Suchet is truly brilliant and I need to finally sit down and watch the newest, final episodes somehow, likely whenever netflix gets the rights to broadcast them.

Just joking ofcourse, everyone is entitled to their opinion and I can see how if you find the whole concept of modernization of the classic Holmes deplorable then you wouldn't really be able to appreciate the series. IMO it is a fantastic adaptation of the classic Sherlock in a modern setting which I really enjoyed from the time I saw the first series long before it became a pop culture phenomenon.

I really like most iterations of Sherlock Holmes so I have ofcourse read the classic stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and actually my first introduction to him as a kid was in the form of Basil The Great Mouse Detective, based on the classic movies where the detective was wonderfully portrayed by Basil Rathbone. But if you really want to see a truly horrible version of Sherlock Holmes then checkout those recent movies by Guy Ritchie with Robert Downey Jr. (who I otherwise like a lot). :)

If I were a truck, I'd probably be something the size of a Juggernault. I mean, I am a big dude, after all. :P

I could also be a Honda F6C too, since it's basically what a truck would be if it came on two wheels. XD My father had that bike once and, God, it is HUGE.

Indeed, the voice acting was great and I also liked that it was a darker movie which didn't water down the character of Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty. I have seen both Guy Ritchie movies and frankly I don't think it should be called Sherlock Holmes because it seemed to me that in order to make it more action oriented they lost the real essence of the character.

The BBC series on the other hand kept all of Sherlock's quirks and characters traits intact while modernizing it. I am curious to know whether you have seen the whole series though because I think the episode "A Scandal in Belgravia" IMO was really well written and one of the best episodes of the entire series, but if you have seen it and still don't like it than that is perfectly fine as you said it would be indeed really boring if all of us liked the same things. :)

I have seen a few episodes, but it just didn't appeal to me, for whatever reason. I think part of it is the unnecessary political aspects to the story. The BBC is very much left wing orientated, and it tends to stick this bias attitude into its shows (which it's not supposed to). Perhaps non-UK viewers don't really notice it as much, and I'm sure many UK fans will disagree, hopefully not too violently - I had forgotten it had a big following, next time I will be sure to keep these opinions to myself :-).

I guess because I started with the books and enjoyed the books, which for the most part were free from political correctness and political propaganda, I just prefer them more. I guess it's similar to reading a book and then seeing the movie adaptation, very rarely does the movie do the book justice.

Now, I think I will retire to my bunker. Before all the Sherlock fanboys turn up to lynch me :-).

That is actually really interesting as being a non-UK viewer I never really thought about the political aspect of the BBC shows. Also you shouldn't let people dissuade you from expressing your opinion and I am glad you did otherwise we wouldn't have had this insightful chat. I think it is ridiculous when people violently challenge someone's opinion on something, its sort of like admonishing someone for having a favorite color that doesn't match with theirs. ;)

The books are indeed the best being the original source material and I really enjoyed them a lot as well. Also agree that the movie adaptation is almost always then what we have created in our minds. I will protect you from any potential fanboy wrath ddickinson, don't worry. :)

I was only joking, I don't mind that people have a different opinion, it's not going to stop me expressing my own opinions. Luckily no one has overreacted to my comment too seriously. I actually enjoy hearing other people's opinions, even if they are not the same as mine.

for me the best episode is the hound of baskerville
it keeps witht he spirit of the original book while throwing in several unique twists
while being an effective horror movie and mystery movie

and the movie stands with russel tovey's performance as henry and its utterly believable
it would be a great introduction to the series and is both an excellent entry in the 9 parter so far as well as a great standalone movie
