HoneyBakedHam: Oh who cares... its a Facebook game, and only Forbes magazine cares that Dr. Who is the BBC's "flagship brand" (and it isn't... BBC News is).

Let them make a casual game to promote the show and drive eyeballs to their online content. They aren't hurting anybody. And let Forbes write about it. Do you know why Forbes writes about social networking games with TV show tie-ins? Because the trailer for Bulletstorm made their blue blood Ivy League writers shit their collective pants with fear.

What would actually be cool is if someone were to develop an MMO based on Dr. Who. From what I can tell, nothing like that is actually happening.
This

Just because it is multiplayer do not mean it is an MMO. What really is the problem with BBC promoting one of their series though a Facebook game? Are you also going to have this rant against, for example Spartacus and other shows/films doing a "mulitplayer" game?

Welcome to the world of viral marketing...
Three Rings is a good company when it comes to game development and keeping their games updated with fresh content.

However, I wonder how they went from making a niche puzzle MMO to this. I'm sure a lot of people were expecting a game more puzzle orientated and similar to Puzzle Pirates to be their next developed title.
It's only a Facebook game. It seems like a waste really, in the hands of a good developer, Dr. Who has a lot of potential for some great adventure games. Instead we just get someone saying: "flash games are popular, and Dr. Who is a brand we've got with recognition, so give me a Dr. Who flash game whether it is a good use of the property or not".

It's the absolute waste of the IP that drives me nuts. They released a Wii game and it was voted the worst game on the system and considering the amount of crap released on it that is a massive achievement. The BBC could give this license to someone like telltale or if they want to stick to indies then the guys behind Ben There, Dan that but no they go for the absolute cheapest possible option selecting studios that have no history of making those types of games. The adventure games were done by Sumo Digital who were born out of Sega's RACING studio for example.
Just a thought. Do you suppose everyone will have to fly a police box? Cause I kinda liked the Master's TARDIS from Tom Baker's days better. Disguised as a Corinthian Column. Now that's classy ;-)

Why?

I mean, just because they use it for a social networking game doesn't mean they can't also work with another developer on a real MMO or a game focused on the hard core gaming market.

I wonder why some developer hasn't approached the BBC... or maybe they have the BBC isn't wise enough to make that move? I don't know...

But I think Dr. Who could be turned into a good single player game for PC, Xbox, and PS3...

Or it could suck...

Who knows...

Its the new DRM rules - each franchise now have only three chances. If they for some reason fail they have to reactivate the franchise, you know - send and email to Microsoft and beg for forgiveness...
