Ian: We are encouraged to be more “social” via twitter, facecrap and numerous other resources – BUT you can only do this if you agree and dare not offend the respective government of the country, in which you reside. Freedom of speech is a fallacy – expression of your opinion is a dangerous act, where you better think damn carefully about each word you wish to write.
I don't see why people should not be allowed to make death threats, or to threaten or intimidate or blackmail others for personal gain. Freedom of speech, man.

I didn't say we shouldn't be able to, but i wouldn't advise you to try it :)

P1na: I was once stopped by the (Spanish) national police because "It was too cold to wear shorts, which made me suspicious". There was this one time I had a machine gun to my head by the (Spanish) military police because speaking on a official local language he did not understand came accross as rude and he demanded respect.

Considering I still wear shorts in winter and despise Spanish police (and most other police by extension), I think I qualify for the most wanted list.

Foxhack: Ha. Down in my hometown, if it's pretty cold and someone is around in shorts, then they're probably from the US, or most likely, Canadian. (60 F -is cold- to us. We're used to 90-110 F temperatures.)

And the cops don't stop them unless they look like they have money, but that's another topic. :P
Another reason I'm never going south of the border.

Come on, Mexicali's not bad. We have a lot less drug related shootouts than most of the country!
We should add a 'reductio ad north koreum' to internet lexicon.

I mean, south of the border, people are automatically going to think I'm a gringo with lots of money. Not a good person to be down there.

and for those of us who don't know any Latin?

Look, unless you're throwing dollars around, nothing's going to happen to you.

Kidnappers usually go for people who look way too wealthy or well-known businessmen. An average Gringo is off their radar. ;)

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Maybe I will visit south of the border, when it is vacation time again for me. It would be nice to see the Aztec pyramids.
Good, good. I'm not saying Mexico isn't dangerous, but it's still safe if you well, play it safe. There should be advice for travelers posted somewhere online.

Well, south of my border I'm treated as a terrorist by the police, not sure which is worse. Plus it's way too hot.

Lifthrasil: anecdote
It reminds me a conversation I had with a policeman in Dublin airport, but I'll stop with my police stories as this is a serious thread i don't want to derail (too much)

strixo: Yes, there are even liberal judges in Texas, like Chief U.S. District Judge Fred Biery who has written some hilarious court documents. Check out:

1) Huh? You mean in France?!
2) Please do :D

So as far as I can tell, this is real, which saddens me. It does seem that he's not yet gone through the legal process, so this is more of an over-active police force than a state gone crazy. The court will (I assume) throw it out rather than send him down for eight years.

Did he have a bail hearing? Surely there was a chance there to let him out?

1) I mean Basque Country. You know, those guys speaking barbarian and blowing up things for sport, around the pyrinees? FYI, we are taught firearm handling at high school, how cool is that? According to some Spanish media, that is. There's been a case, abroad, where I told a Spanish girl I was Basque and she literally ran away from me because I was "one of those...". Dafuq.

2) Nah, I'd rather not. I've gotten run-ins with the police too many times to tell them all now, varying from funny ones like the Germany one to the machine gun from the Spanish military police. In some I did nothing wrong, but I'm the first to admit that my one arrest was (probably) justified. Let me recap, there's Italy, Belgium, China, Japan, Switzerland, Ireland, Lithuania... probably forgetting something. And of course more Spanish ones. Hey maybe I could theme a giveaway around this... or even a receiveaway. Does that term even exist? For each game you guys gift me, I tell you one of my police stories.
A LoL player. Go figure. What do you expect from the biggest cesspool of a gamer community on the internet? =P

Screw not derailing this thread. You got my interest now. What is it that is attracting all those cops? There's gotta be something as this does seem fairly unusual.
