ZapMcRaygunn: In essence, Disco didn't really die, it just morphed into New Romantic and the type of music Thompson Twins, Human League, Duran Duran and so many other bands did. Some call it New Wave, but true New Wave was more of a post-punk style with songs like 99 Luftbaloons.

Ivory&Gold: The British Glam Rock of the early 70s was what morphed into New Romantic. Many of the stars of that movement, like Steve Strange or Boy George, used to be Bowie kids that went to clubs dessed as Ziggy or Aladdin Sane.

Disco was the first agressively gay Amercian music style, while Glam Rock was its British equivalent. There were overlaps and common influences, like Little Richard, but both styles were mostly distinct and evolved differently.
Where do you get off calling these guys gay!?

I grew up in the 70's and I can say that Disco is what created the riff between my parents music and the music I enjoyed. My parents enjoyed other music, but whenever DIsco came on the volume got turned up. Remember this is the days before ipods and even walkmans. You had to suffer listening to the music your parents liked on long vacation drives. I could listen to the oldies, but disco was horrible.

The nerve of him, next he'll be claiming Freddy Mercury was gay.

That's a good looking shirt. I might have to pick me up one of those.
The 70's brought on the birth and proliferation of metal and prog, with some really great bands in this genre during the decade (in fact it's probably the only great decade for prog rock whatsoever), krautrock, space rock, as well as darker psych rock, so that's cool. And MELLOTRONS! :D

Still, don't y'all be shit-talking disco. Italo-disco is THE. SHIT. Hi-NRG and space disco also rule. Too bad those didn't really take off until the 80's, but here's some awesome stuff from the 70's, starting off with Giorgio "Motherfucking" Moroder:

Who HASN'T lost their heart to a Starship Trooper:

Sparks! I've not actually listened to anything else by them but they're supposed to be cool guys and a cool band and this is a pretty cool track:

Someone let Mr. Space know his magic fly is open:

It's too bad this didn't inspire a sexy, 70's musical film adaptation of The Island of Dr. Moreau (or at the very least be the title track for Night of the Lepus), but we can all dream, can't we? In the meantime you can crank this up on infinite loop while playing A Machine for Pigs for TWICE the awesome:

You probably have heard this song before. More than once even. You probably will say it sucks but don't lie to yourself, you know you LOVE it. Denial, it's not just a death metal band in South Carolina! (or a, uh, death metal band from Mexico, THESE PHRASES DON'T WORK IN WRITTEN FORM):

I have to admit that is a good song.
I do not see why it has to be one or the other - I am going with both. I spent plenty of time Dancing at the Disco in the 70's and I absolutely love 70's Rock - Expand your Musical Boundaries folks.

I liked The Village People a lot when I was a young kid, but I didn't know they were gay, I likely didn't even know what gay love was back then (I was only a child of the 70s).

In answer to the OP question: I like 70's rock for more, but being 42(*), I'm more into 80's music.

(*) Yes, I am the Ultimate Answer to the Question of Life the Universe and Everything! But what was the question again? Need to build me some question-finding machine for that. Let me twist my whiskers (*) and think about it a bit.

(**) or was it flip my flippers? I really need to re-read the Hitchhiker's Guide, it's been too long.

I think only one of them was actually gay, (if you can guess which one I'll give you a prize, and but give you a prize I mean I won't give you anything!). They still rock... err disco.... hmm, they were still a rather delightful musical ensemble.
I've never really had a problem with disco, being a rocker. My main beef has been with American country music that sounds just like classic rock except the singer's voice has a twang to it.

I remember when I lived with my biological father, he told me he started listening to country for that very reason.

Elmofongo: Why was disco so hated? Especially coming from rock/metal musicians/fans?

hedwards: Why do people hate Bieber? It's mainly because it's mindless pop with little to no redeeming value. I'm sure there's a few exceptions, but the decadence and self indulgence of it all pretty much assured that it would die a fiery death before too long.
Bieber is a rather horrible person though, although most people who hate Bieber now already hated him before he started to act that way (at least before the newspapers picked up on the bad things he did).
'70 rock all the way!!! Seriously, just search for '70 bands and listen them and you'll be delighted.
