Thanks again, and see you at a thousand games!
In my opinion, GOG's next big step is their own client similar to Steam or Origin.
The next big thing is: LUCASARTS!!

secretblack: I think the fact that achievements are pretty much everywhere now sort of reiterates the fact that "lots" of people enjoy the challenge of "a little something extra" in their game. You might not even realize you have slain 500000000000000 orcs, but the fact that you won an achievement for it sort of makes you feel better about yourself.

Mrstarker: Who else uses them besides Microsoft and Valve?

Also, I'd doubt that anyone grinding 500000000000000 orc kills truly enjoys the game. They might get some satisfaction from checking off an item from a list, but I don't think it would make the game itself any more enjoyable.

Here's a critical take on the broader phenomenon of gamification: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWfMjQKXZXk
Technically PSN has "trophies" which are pretty similar. The only company that hasn't embraced some kind of gaming merit system is Nintendo.

When you factor in the millions of people that play the 360, PS3, and games on Steam...I think you have failed in your logic that no one cares. But that's okay. If you honestly are of the opinion that no one likes/cares about such systems I can understand. Honestly the merit of such things is kind of forced on gamers anyway, but for those that are competitive...the system does give people the ability to achieve a kind of ranking. And we know people are competitive and like to outdo one another. Not all of course, but many. That's human nature.

I also think you missed the point about the orc kills. I was being silly. The thing about myself and achievements is that I don't look down at the list. I just am delighted to see something pop up in game and see that I received an achievement for accomplishing something. When you're playing a game like Skyrim, for instance, and you suddenly see an achievement pop up, you kind of sit back and say, "Wow...I did that...that many times?"

I like statistics. Sometimes achievements bring in perspective. I think the achievements that just pop up because you advanced to the next chapter of the game are kind of silly though. But then again people have bought games just to move up their gamer rank. Even if the games were incredibly easy or really poorly designed. The idea of purchasing a terrible game for achievements has been documented many times.

I wasn't saying that nobody cares about achievements, I was saying that nobody else cares about your achievements.

For me, the bad effects achievements have on gaming far outweigh any positive effects individuals might get from them.
Gog is not broke. So, do not fix it. If you wish to offer more choices to customers that is great but I value freedom over convenience every time. That is the only thing I could suggest. More games! More choices! More freedom! More Gog. Carry on.
I think GOG should start selling DRM-free movies and TV shows next.
I want LucasArts games! + I signed. ^^

I am proud to say that I have been here to see this service grow from the begining. I knew that there was something very special happening here. I look forward to seeing what the future holds and what release #1000 will be.

Game on guys and thanks.
Daily Deals for 75% off like Steam would be nice.

Me too. I'd really welcome GOG on my ubuntu laptop, not just only on Win7 one ;-)
I log in, I answer the question, and then... what the hell I'm supposed to do to get the games?

There isn't any clue.

Could anybody explain what to do?
Well, if we are talking about fantasies, I'd love for GOG to be a future publisher, responsible for the publishing of triple AAA games, like Mass Effect or Skyrim, totally DRM-free.

That'd be a dream come true!

On a more realistic note, bring in Vampire Bloodlines and Morrowind GOTY to the catalog already. :D

(Not entering the contest, by the way, so just posting my thoughts here)
