CD Projekt's harvesting the fruits of their labour, I guess.

Foxhack: You'll not find a bigger site filled with scum and villany as 4chan.

... Except maybe Mitt Romney's campaign management. But the point stands!
Precisely why it's impressive that CDPR's values have swayed the opinions of even those who would normally condemn people for NOT pirating something.

rampancy: Almost makes you long for the days when people on sites like Abandonia were going about how crooked and evil CDP/GOG was for making money on abandonware games that should be free...

klaymen: Or RPG Codex, they were bitching about it too.
some classics from there include
Those forums are the shit! Just browsing there is fun as hell. Like driving a sportscar all tuned up and shit. Looks like some good games, too. Old games, but good games.

Too bad it looks like the community will be "meh". I guess there's a reason I settled down here.
Theres also a post there by a now semi regular poster here ranting about how evil gog is and how they pocket all the money and are charging for abandonware...
CDP gets their money out of it too. Also considering that they sell OpF with the same serial they shouldn't - because they simply take game cds - rip them and sell that stuff which makes them cheap.

rampancy: This was way back when GOG was just coming out of its original private beta phase...it was pretty much pirates feeling butthurt over GOG daring to charge money for old games.
I remember that. Back when GOG wasn't well-known there were plenty who ran across references to them on abandonware sites and assumed they were a piracy organisation (in the stricter sense of the metaphor: that they were selling rip-offs to those who didn't know better). As recently as 2008 it made sense to assume the worst of anyone selling games more than a couple of years old - back then games came in three flavours: "new", "recent" and "discontinued". That's just one of the ways GOG has made the world a slightly better place.

Wait - what ? You mean online, right ? If there's one thing I'm fairly certain of, it's that store shelves were filled with cheap PC rereleases for years... Unless that's some local oddity I simply take for granted... like being able to buy the latest (2011) release of Grim Fandango for about $6 ;P.

Yes, I meant online. I have also found plenty of discontinued games still being sold at retailers (unfortunately, what you find is luck of the draw - there are several games I had been searching for for years and never found until they appeared here). Now that there is a proven demand you can find all sorts of things at Amazon, GOG, Steam, DotEmu, Gamersgate, etc.
