Lodium: There are far worser sites like IronStar mentioned.
One time in my younger days, when i was brave and thougth internet was a pretty safe place
i jumped in with both feet and started swimming around.

My delusions soon got shattered and i was wondering for the longest time afterward if i was still sane or if i neded to place myself in a mental institution, thats how disturbing some of the stuff i came across was.

I think it took me a year or something to recover.
i never try to swim/surf on the internet withouth aim or to experiment ever again.
Now I'm really curious where did you end up to freak out like that. I've seen bunch of abnormal things on internet, but only few of them gave me creeps, and even fewer had any bigger impact (the thing I was talking about few posts back).

sauvignon1: I mostly hang out on /co/, which is pretty decent most of the time. /mlp/ can be funny, but has too much porn . I only go to /tv/ for the Breaking Bad and Walking Dead threads. /b/ is worthless, and I can't understand why people still frequent it.
Because ANONYMOUS!

4chan is if nothing else an interesting social experiment. What does anonymity do to people of the internet? What will happen if you let people do what they want, with no real constraints? You do of course get a lot of utterly moronic things, people trying to outdo each other in terms of stupidity, people who try to shock others with vile stuff and a lot of other things related to that.
But you also get some genuinely good things coming out of it. While all I know about these things comes from second hand sources (I don't visit 4chan myself), there seem to be people who work on games together, people who create collaborate works of art and more than a few intelligent discussions about many different things.

There are a few other sites with similar "ideas" as 4chan out there, and most of them are far worse. They just have the bad without any of the good.

bevinator: When people think of 4chan, they mostly think of /b/. Which is a shame, because /b/ IS the fetid pus-weeping shithole that everyone thinks it is. However, the other boards are places of incredible awesome, especially /tg/, /wsg/, /co/, and /x/. There are many great things that have come from there, from the Angry Marines to the SCP and Slenderman, and probably 50% of all memes. In a way, it's interesting that so many internet goers have a fear and misunderstanding of one of the primary sources of internet culture.
Well, this. I won't defend /b, hell, I avoid 4chan as a whole for the most part, but I'll at least click links to the other parts. It's like everywhere else, but the rep /b has gives it a 'When it's bad, it's the worst thing in the history of mankind and a place where all of the evil's go', but when the rest are decent, no one cares about them. (Ok, not all of the rest of them are good, but like everywhere else, there are some decent spots).
There are places much worse than 4chan out there.

When i was still in the US working for a rather huge company it was standard HR policy to fire anyone that was caught running a Tor node right away, management learned that the hard way when the cops came in one time to confiscate a ton of gear because one shithead manager used the darknet to hire a hitman to take out his wife.

It turns out that said hitman was a plant and the cops had set up some nodes themselves.

There are a couple of regulars in here that i know that work in ISPs, i'm sure they will show up later to share some horror stories.

Sogi-Ya: I thought 4chan was part of 2chan?
Nope but according to the story 4chan is based on/copied 2chan

I find it's best to not talk about 4chan, or the other chans for that matter.

That said some of it's boards aren't that bad, there are certainly parts where you should not go though.

Funnily enough, I wouldn't say that even /b/ is evil. Not entirely rotten, anyway...
As far as I've been able to gather, the people there aren't necessarily douchebags and ill-willed ruffians ("trolls" if you will) but fundamentally broken individuals who've had their illusions shattered, their will to live stripped away, traumatic events piling up so high, they've eclipsed the entirety of their existence... Stranded in a hostile world, with no faith, no goals, nothing sacred, they indulge in playful nihilism, words stripped of meanings and ringing more and more hollow as time goes on. In the hivemind they find a semblance of "belonging", a group they can feel a part of; the ultimate rejects in their mercurial sanctuary.
I browse /g/ - Technology.

Want real horror? Go to Gurochan.

Ugh the horror.
I only browse /a/ and /vg/
On most boards ppl pretend to be twelve, on /b/ they are twelve.

fr33kSh0w2012: Oh and I thought 4chan was a joke..

Navagon: Well... it is. In a way. Although who the joke is on is another matter.

Sogi-Ya: I thought 4chan was part of 2chan?

Navagon: 4chan is twice as bad.
No, I like 4chan and 2chan is disgusting.

sheepdragon: Meh, there are much worse websites out there. 4chan's not all horrible either, depending on the board. There can be some shit posting at times, but that's the price of anonymity I guess.
Agreed. I think it is pretty much a distillation of the internet; so you get a lot of bad in with the good. For instance, I actually like /tg/ (traditional games). There was a really nice Let's Play of Dragon Pass there a few months ago. It was so civil, it could have been mistaken for a GOG thread. However, I have seen some extremely vile things on others boards; I won't mention any of them out of respect.

Exactly. I have to admit I was a person that wrote that whole place off as a hive of scum and villainy until I actually browsed some of the more, shall we say, "ethical" boards.

Haha, and the very next comment:

ShadowWulfe: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
On my honor, I replied to Bevinator before reading that. ;)
