I think those games were always free, at least before they made you sign up to get them.

Thanks for the heads up. I remember playing a fair bit of Alien Carnage back in the day (when it was called Halloween Harry, an infinitely cooler title), so I think I'll try it out again for nostalgia's sake.

3D Realms already released those as freeware years ago. They can easily be downloaded (legally) here: (and elsewhere on the 'net)

Those have been freeware for quite a while now. You can also find them legally at other sites, like Classicdosgames (all the green ones are freeware releases).
Epic MegaGames also made several of their old games freeware years ago.

Admittedly, I suppose that the releases on the 3D Realms site are readily set up to run on new systems, which would be neat; and we should probably thank them for not simply making them commercial titles again (Cinemaware, I'm looking at you).
