Oathe: It's because you didn't click the gift this order box before pushing buy. If you had you would have gotten the code instead.
I clicked it on the main page. I just hit the game and it was added to my shelf. No chance to do anything.

HypersomniacLive: Yes, but during the Spring Insomnia Promo, you only had a "buy now" button, while now if you click on the price button, the game(s) just get added to your cart and you have to check out in the usual manner.
That alone makes me think that any freebies during the 2014 DRM-Free Summer Sale won't work in the same fashion.

skeletonbow: They already stated in the news announcement that there would be one big one day freebie promo near the end of the sale, and random freebies showing up during the flash sale, we just haven't seen any yet (that I've heard anyway). :)
No freebies since i been awake *had my eyes glued to the sale ...for the most part*

justanoldgamer: If I remember well the last insomnia sale did not have this option for free games, you did not know you were getting it for free until you pressed buy and then it bypassed the screen where you have the gift box.
I gifted out a copy of a game I got for free during the sale.Maybe it glitched when I did it I'm not really sure, but I know either this happened, or I dreamed this whole thing up after being awake for days of the insomnia sale. (either could be plausible really.)

That was probably during round #2 where the game was automatically added to your shelf if you didn't already have it. During rounds #1 and #3, you were taken to a check out page where you had the chance to mark it as a gift.
