high rated
I think it's pretty much a given that companies can come and go over time whether they make video games or potato sacks, and that individual products and services of those companies can come and go over time also based on any number of factors including business interests (or lack thereof), legal issues and other factors. As such, any video games that have any kind of mandatory requirement for Internet access to any of their features "in the cloud" so to speak are pretty much more or less dependent on those cloud based features continuing to be made available and supported by someone, whether it is the company who created the game or some 3rd party. When we buy these games we knowingly or unknowingly accept that as a part of the deal, and these services can and do get shut down over time and I think that everyone should assume that such services will get shut down for every game eventually - the only sure variable being the amount of time it will take. With some games it might be months, others a few years, and some games might stick around for a decade or more. It's all a bit of a crap shoot though so long as the games require a centralized component that is not under the consumer's own control and to which there is no other alternative easily available.
We can always buy games and hope for the best - and that's ultimately what we're doing when we buy them, but we don't really know when our games online centralized features will be shut down, but can almost guarantee that they will be some day. It might be long after we've finished the game and lost interest in it hopefully, but that day is coming for every game with centralized company hosted or 3rd party controlled features more likely than not. If we are likely to be upset about that happening for a given game before we've gotten our enjoyment out of it, then we really should not support those companies and buy the games that bind themselves to centralized online services which can not be customer duplicated (legally).
If we are excited about a game and anticipate it highly, we might desire to buy and play it higher than we worry about the risk of it getting shut down later on and go ahead and purchase the game anyway to enjoy it now - but by opening our wallets we accept that we can get our fingers slammed in the door at any point after that whether we like the practice or not.
Steam may or may not be around in 5 years or 10 years or 20 years, I don't think anyone can be 100% sure of that either way really, nor can anyone know for certain whether any individual Steam game will be modified to work without Steam should Steam vanish. We all accept the fact our entire Steam catalogue might vanish suddenly if Valve goes belly up when we open our wallets and buy games there. Truth is, we have no guarantees whatsoever about it. Ultimately I believe it ends up coming down to individual games and individual publishers what will happen if and when that doomsday scenario ever occur in the future.
One thing I've been wondering for a while now is what if any plans publishers and developers have for making currently IPv4-only capable video games (old and new) compatible and functional over IPv6-only and dualstack networks in the future without requiring the end user to use transitionary technologies (tunnels and other mechanisms) to keep old games running on old network technology. It's not a huge concern now while IPv4 still dominates online Internet traffic, but in 5 and 10 years from now that is likely to change significantly. The transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is going to affect the online functionality of the majority of video games much more than the demise of any company IMHO. The only unknown is how many years until it becomes an actual problem for people and how many folks are still wanting to play the affected games in question at that time which have not had IPv6 support added to them.
Personally, I think the majority of old games will die off online as a result and be left just to those willing and capable of hacking up their own workarounds. People will likely lose more games due to this technical problem than to an event like Steam dying off in the near future IMHO because the IPv6 problem is almost a guarantee within the next decade or two, while Steam might still be here 30 years from now for all we know.
DISCLAIMER: Yeah, I'm an IPv6 gearhead. :)

I'm wondering about Tex Murphy Classics (80% off), Ultima Complete Saga (80% off) and Broken Sword Classics (80% off)
I saw them in the google docs list, and I assume they will be back on the 29th?
What exactly do they include and how much did they cost?

Tex Murphy Classics contained all of the Tex Murphy games except Tesla Effect, and the Ultima package was Ultima 1-9 plus Ultima Underworld 1+2 IIRC, Broken Sword was 1, 2, 3, 4 but not 5. You'd have to calculate the prices though or find them on a list, don't have that handy I'm afraid. They were the best deals to date on all these games though that I've seen so worth it if anyone is into any of them.

Ixamyakxim: Lynette have you played Spellforce before? I admit I'd never heard of the games but they looked interesting. I couldn't tell if the game was more RTS with RPG mixed in (something like Dragonshard) or more of an RPG with RTS like controls (think Dungeon Siege - well before the most recent one). Anyway, impressions if you have them would be great - they're not high on my priority list now as I have *ahem* a few games to play now but I'm just curious for the future.
Hi Ixamyakxim No, I haven't played the Spelforce series before but it's one I've always fancied the look of which is why I took the plunge on the bundle (against the better judgement of my bank account lol).
Unfortunately there's not much chance of my getting around to playing them any time soon as I'm currently working on 'completing Witcher 1 & 2 before February and have 100s (no exaggeration) of other games in my backlog waiting to be played but I'm sure there's somebody here who will be able to give you an idea about the games.
