CelestialBunny: OK I'm done for this sale, flash rotations offer nothing new and Steam seal needs my money...come on GOG step up or go home
Ha, i'm way ahead of you. I already blew most of my fun money in both, the GOG and the Steam Summer Sale so they are both as good as over for me. *lol*

IanM: I don't agree with anything on this list and while a lot of people do like some of the crap I don't think it's the majority. People put up with it because they want to play the latest games, aren't willing to miss out and don't want to pirate. There is nothing about DRM and imposed limitations that is in the interests of paying customers.

To me, Valve are absolute scum and I would happily see the 'service' blocked within the EU.

I've experienced more than once that I can't play my games that I paid for because there is a forced update of the client which I can't download because of bandwidth limitations. All the other bullshit like trading cards and achievements gets in the way. I don't want to be tracked or have statistics recorded. I don't want auto patches either, I want games that are finished and working 100% before they are sold.

Gabe Newell is a greedy fat **** (insert the strongest four letter word you can think of)
I tried to be clear in what I said that the features I listed as benefits are things that are intended to be beneficial and are indeed seen as such by many Steam customers. I was not suggesting that any or all of these features are beneficial to every Steam user nor that every Steam user thinks they are. They are indeed however many of the touted benefits of Steam of which do have a large number of customers that enjoy, expect and even demand for modern PC gaming and Steam competitors that do not offer similar features at least optionally will simply lose out on the business of any gamer that refuses to shop anywhere that does not offer such services, and any game developer who decides to use and require particular technologies and features as offered by Steam who isn't willing to release there game on platforms that don't offer similar features just wont do so. Individual gamers might be perfectly ok with that on a person by person basis and I'm sure many people are happy if no new games ever come to GOG ever again in the future. There are people here who would be happy if the only games to ever come to GOG from now on are PC games pre-1995 and Amiga games, but if they got their wishes GOG would probably go out of business before the year's end too. :)

GOG is trying to grow a business and expand in an ever changing game market and Steam is the big competition out there. If they are to ignore everything that Steam has to offer and fight against it, they essentially would end up fighting themselves into an unsustainable business model eventually as the number of games available to them dry up over time or are limited to nothing but 8-bit indie roguelikes and platformers. :) As much as many people here would think that is just fine for them and love it, I think GOG has bigger plans, and I think the majority of gamers here want to see more modern gaming elements available here too despite the cries of a highly vocal minority. :)

I agree with you about Gabe being fat, but he did create Halflife so he deserves a few doughnuts every now and then. :)

I threw GOG about $70-80 this sale so far I'm guestimating. So far Steam has coughed $2.48 out of me (minutes ago for Payday and Marlow Briggs), and they probably wont see any more than that unless more of my wishlisted games drop to sub-$1.49 like that. hehe

Stilton: Excellent explanation, thank you, and one that confirms what I thought...

...I am old-fashioned!

All of those features, while useful to some (or to those who think they are useful) are unnecessary for my gaming needs. The overwhelming feeling I get from Steam is that they want to control the gaming industry and that by getting more publishers on their side they are forcing people into adopting their god-awful (imo) system and their megalomaniacal (hyper-controlling) way of doing things. They want to be another corporate monster like Microsoft and bully the game playing public into going their way by offering an extensive library of attractive properties. This to me is absolutely wrong. When it all so blatantly comes down to control and profit the game players are ultimately the ones who are going to suffer, whether that be by enforced DRM or playing Steam's game and painting themselves into a corner by closing off other options that might make their game buying/playing fairer (by having choice) and more open ended (by not requiring Steam's insidious client). I like the simplicity and ethical correctness of buying a product and using it in the way I want to. Here its called Consumers' Rights and a lot of people feel very strongly about it. My experience of Steam has only ever left a feeling of unease, and if they offer games that I want to play but have no alternative access to, then I shall go without. Fortunately there's a lot out there to keep me happy...
Do NOT forget that with that much information in one place, the national security apparatus in your country is going to be snooping on it day and night. You can call me paranoid, but even before Snowden I knew that the U.S. was spying on anyone and everyone using any form of social media they could look into. Same goes for Steam, since it is a social media platform! It is different here, because everything I write in is open to anyone who wants to read it, but if I have privacy setting set that say you can not get into my information then any attempt to go beyond that is spying which is what the NSA/CIA/Homeland do. It is not just American citizens that they are spying on either, it is EVERY SINGLE BIT THAT PASSES THROUGH U.S. SERVERS! Again forgive my apparent paranoia! ;-)

This is a feature that Steam probably neglect to boast about ;-)

Well, up to now, GOG's sale has, imho, been quite successfu. And, as far as I am concerned, Steam's offerings to date are... lacklustre.

I can understand why GOG offered a possibility to get all the bundles just before Steam's sale started, as this may mean some e people spend their budget here rather than there. Not sure how successfull this is, as purchasing digital games has so little rational behaviour in it...

Where I join you indeed is that it is a bit sad that they didn't throw a new set of flash offers after their firesale on the 18th, as that would have left us with an incentive to keep having a look. As it is, I have the feeling I have seen it all.

I guess I missed that part of the post, sorry. As much as Steam has ultimately disappointed I'm interested to see what Galaxy brings to the table, especially as GOG promised we can still use the standalone installers and nothing will be forced on us.

I agree. There are only two more games I want: Reus, which I've somehow managed to miss until now (it'll be available in about 45 mins), and Spelunky, which came when the mass bundle/flash sale was on (how long ago was that?)

Seeing the same old faces over and over has indeed become somewhat tiresome.

What makes me laugh when people say that is that the flash sales held by other distributors rarely show more than 4 games at a time and usually for 4-8 hours per timeslot, and they only usually run for 1-2 days with a total number of games having been offered being very very low, and in my observation if you miss a game in a flash sale elsewhere then you just miss it period as it is not returning for a second chance.

GOG's flash sale has 228 games total in 1-2 hour timeslots rotating many more games per day and running for 2+ weeks and with discounts that equal or exceed what other stores usually offer for the same games. If you miss a game because you were busy or something, no problem because it will come around again in a few hours or tomorrow or 10 or more times throughout the sale.

As I mentioned in one of the sale related threads earlier today - as Louis CK says - Everything is Amazing, Nobody's Happy. ;)
So, we finally leave the 2's...
The following 10 games (now) have only appeared 3 times
Battle Isle Platinum (includes Incubation)
Costume Quest
Defender's Quest (Last 2's holdout)
Dragon Lore: The Legend Begins
Ether One Deluxe Edition
Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut
Lucius
PixelJunk Monsters HD
Super Hexagon
The Real Texas

BTW its 227 games, still plenty.

Going by the flash deals pics that JMich and other members uncovered, there's still a chance that a few more titles will join the flash deals rotation within the last week or during the last few days. If I had to speculate at this point, I'd say that the agreements for those titles cover a (rather) limited amount of copies to be sold and that's why they haven't made an appearance yet (I'd apply the same to those titles that have appeared the least times).

What gives me hope that the 8 missing titles (or at least some of them) still have a good chance to appear is that though GOG stated in their Summer Sale Newsletter that there would be 200 games participating in the Flash Deals, 227 titles already made more than one appearance, and adding 8 (or 3) to them, would bring the total up to a nice round number. :-)

Of course it's only speculation on my part, but I expect GOG to still have a couple of aces up their sleeve for this sale.;-)

EDIT: typo... again, thanks fronzelneekburm!

Maybe they should have added games slowly into rotation instead of everything from first few days.
The sales period is a bit long for same games to appear over and over imho

Well, I'm happy with GOG's sale. I got the bundles and the flash sales I wanted. My wishlist is reduced to a few recent titles. What I say though is that GOG could probably keep a sustained level of attention from its audience if there was an evolution in the flash sales, Either by changes in the level of rebate, either by having some games being added later on to the flash sales, in a sort of "phase in" of these 200+ games.

Has a link to these pics been published somewhere ?

Exactly, keeping us a bit "hungry" .... After all, there is still a bit of a "hunter gatherer" in each of us gamers...

They did promise another giveaway of a shorter duration on Thursday (Day 7?). But that line got purged from the weekend announcement.
I'm quite happy with the format of the flash sales.

Sure they could have spread the introduction of new games over the whole sale to make it more interesting but then it would have forced us to keep more of an eye on it.

More interesting but less practical.

Two insomnia sales a year are enough glue you to the screen interesting sales for me.

The sun is shining so I don't mind a bit of practicality.

Besides it only seems monotone for us because we keep such a close eye on the sale. Casual buyers probably haven't seen games on flash sales as many times as us.
