dhak: Oh no, The Last Federation is coming soon but if I buy it on GOG I won't have access to the Linux version!
Please, GOG, even if you don't have the time to port all those classic Windows games, at least distribute the Linux version of games which have it! It shouldn't cost much...
Any hopes of buying it here and getting the Linux version somehow?
Yes you will. GOG is adding Linux platform to the store sometime this fall. You'll have to wait until then to be able to download the Linux version of the game (or possibly longer if they don't have it ready at launch), but it should most likely be made available sometime before the end of the year. Keep in mind though that GOG doesn't have the source code for most of the games nor port them to other platforms, they mostly either track down the already existing ports and get the rights to them as well and package them up, or in many cases with games they package them up with DOSBox/ScummVM to work on any platform in theory. When Linux platform arrives in the fall I am guessing that they will also use Wine to make some games available in Linux or even other technologies.
If a game does have existing Linux binaries available out there though then the chances are high that GOG will be able to get a hold of the rights to them and add them to the catalogue when they go live with Linux platform.
So, I think it is a fairly safe play to buy games here which have Linux support out there already either natively or via a shim of some kind in anticipation for GOG Linux platform support along with a little patience for it to get here and for a given game to become available. Within 6 months to a year after they launch I would imagine every game that could run on Linux will probably be rockin n rollin here. :) We can hope anyway. :)
