FudoMyo: Why doesn’t the Gothic bundle include 1? Would have been an insta-buy.
avatar
Grargar: Because the publisher of Gothic 2+3 is different than the publisher of Gothic 1.
On the other hand... You can't even buy Gothic 1 alone there.

It is looking pretty darn random.

blotunga: Gothic is again not included... At least I think I'll get the Gothic 2&3... The Settlers bundle has the Heritage of Kings, which I also not really want... still the price is ok.
avatar
skeletonbow: Heh, I bought Heritage of the Kings The Settlers years ago because the graphics on the box and writeup/feel of the game packaging info made me believe it'd be up my alley. At the time I was looking for some kind of games that were some kind of medieval real time strategy castle building war games of sorts and looking at all games that visually might be that type of thing. It was one game that gave me that impression, and while it wasn't quite what I had in mind that I wanted at the time (I never did find a game that was exactly what I was looking for), it blew me away as an awesome RTS game with a rich tech tree, lots of harvestable resources (6), tonnes of buildings and upgrades out the wazoo. I just love that sort of thing plus the season changes and weather machine and all sorts of other things. I had a blast with it and thought perhaps I'd like to try some of the other Settlers games some day too.

In the GOG forums though I've read on quite a few occasions people talking about the series and praising many of the games as their personal favourites but more often than not people seem to really dislike Heritage of the Kings or consider it the worst game in the series. That surprised me because I think the game is awesome personally independent of the other games (which I never played), however I've been actually thrilled to hear people disenfranchised with that game because I think... "Hey, if the think it is the worst game in the series and I think the game is fantastic, maybe all the other games in the series are even more awesome!" and that has made me very curious to get them all ever since. :) The opportunity to get them for $keletonCheap0 pricing has not availed itself over time though until today... :)

So... now I'm contemplating... I own Heritage already, but on DVD not GOG, so I have to buy it again to get the full discount on the other games. So that'll be $12.50ish for the set... Hrm... decisions decisions.... I dunno... This one could go either way for me. I know for sure I'll get them at some point likely but ... go out on a whim now, or wait for a future deal that's even better? Hrm.. :)

I've got a crapload of bundles in my cart for hours waiting to make this decision up before I finalize and seal the deal. If anyone has thoughts to help me make my mind up, please fire away! :)

avatar
Gnostic: given the fact that GOG only have 750+ games, It will be difficult to do so as I may run out of games you are even mildly interested in.

................
Checks wishlist............ What, how come my wishlist is still so huge? Given the statistic it should be less than 50, not still 100+
avatar
skeletonbow: Hey... wait a minute! Are you saying... Hrm... Are you saying that we're supposed to actually be interested in games we buy?

Shit!
Well if not where is the fun of buying games? You got to at least pretend you are interested in the game even though deep down you know it is the crazy discount that drives you to buy games you never heard before until now.

Looks at library, Ah shiny!

avatar
Grargar: Did you end up buying SpellForce?
avatar
LynetteC: Yep, I got 'em. :-)

I'm trying to resist the urge to buy the Flash Sale Spellforce game as well and wait for it to come on sale at a later date. I have SO MANY games in my backlog anyway that I wouldn't be playing it (or any of the earlier Spellforce games) any time soon.

Ah, let's be honest, I'm trying to resist the urge to buy ANY MORE games in the Flash Sale (or bundles for that matter). Whilst my haul is only small in comparison to some *cough* txnca *cough* Gnostic *cough* I've spent around £52 ($86) which is WAY more than I really should have! :-)
Well you will be like me, it is only a matter of time. There are still winter sales coming to move GOG entire catalog to your rack
avatar
txnca: I would call the kind of gaming we do as Old School Gaming! Everyone I grew up playing games with all play this way because at the time $20-$30 bucks for a game was a lot of money! Now days, it's like they are in too big of a hurry to really enjoy the games they buy. I'm glad my daughter plays like I do. She learned what all you miss when you rush through while playing Sacred Gold. She started playing it after watching me play then would get mad that she couldn't find any of the good loot like I was finding. Learned her lesson from that!
avatar
LynetteC: I think you're right about the 'Old School Gaming'. Not only because of the price of games then, but also because back in the day, content was everything. There was no full orchestral soundtrack and fancy, realistic 3d graphics so there had to be gameplay. My favourite example of this is Ultima 4 - The Quest Of The Avatar. The graphics are only 16 colours, the music was basic midi but the content; oh my, that game would keep you trekking across Britannia from one town and shrine to another and back again for DAYS on end. One of my all-time favourites.

And from one of my favourites to another - Sacred Gold. What a game! I may snag a gift code next time it comes around just so that I can introduce someone to it's fabulousness! lol

What character do you play? Every time I re-play, I intend to try a different character but always end up a vampire. :-)
I like the archer in Sacred, you use multi shot + spit arrow and you get an amazing number of arrows in one shot. Then there is combo for multi shot. One shot almost everything under the sun indeed.

Hey all. I've been eying the Risen games. Anyone here played them? How is the gameplay and storyline? Can you turn gore off? I don't mind a little gore, but most games go a little overboard for me so I usually turn it off. I know, I know, why buy hack and slash if I don't want gore. lol

Looked at a couple of Let's Play Risen but couldn't get past the player's voices, accents or gameplay techniques. Some of those guys LOVE to hear themselves talk and don't seem so interested in actually playing the game or reviewing it. If someone knows a let's player that plays Risen without so much "Aren't I the witty fellow" commentary I'd appreciate it. Thanks all

Random yes, but not looking random with equal weighting to me. I'm betting that some games have been given higher weight for coming up more often than others.

Risen series is on my wishlist for a future sale. I hope they patch it to add more gore with veins spurting blood right onto the inside of the monitor and whatnot. :)

GOG Galaxy client is probably going to make it even easier to dump cash at GOG for games too. Perhaps a taunting mode that taunts you to buy things done with a sense of humour or something... that'd be cool. :)

txnca: Hey LynetteC, have you ever played Sacred 2 with or without the expansion pack Ice and Blood? It's a much bigger game and it is very good as well. I hear they are working on Sacred 3 although I am not sure it will ever come out and be like the previous two.
avatar
LynetteC: Yes, I have Sacred 2 on CD, but no expansion although I'm always on the lookout for it.
Being in the UK you should be able to find it online. I had to get my copy from the UK so I could play the expansion as it wasn't compatible with the US version. You can also use the service that skeletonbow below gave you the link for. Have you tried the fan made content for Sacred 2 yet? It's pretty good too.

Grargar: Sacred 3 is on its way for an August release (1 and 5 for Europe and America respectively).
Official Site
Last I heard that it wasn't really Sacred. Seems like they have closed the world and are making it co-op even when playing alone which sux. Things that made Sacred 1-2 Sacred are missing in this upcoming release.

Granted! The gore is so thick. gloppy and drippy on the monitor you have to wipe your own face and can't see the gameplay action, keep losing your place and have to restart the game. PS. I wanted to add chunks, lots of bloody chunks and pieces.

I wish...Oh wait, that's another thread. lol

LynetteC: Thanks skeletonbow. I'll check that link when I'm back on my laptop.

Can anyone tell me if there's anything in the Ultima bundle that wasn't included in the Ultims Collection all those years qho? :-)
avatar
staticblast: If you're talking about the CD-Rom Ultima Collection, the GOG package includes the Worlds of Ultima games as well as Ultima Underworld 1+2 and Ultima 9 which the CD-Rom collection lacked.
Hmm... I have the Ultima Collection CD (twice as a second copy came with my U9 SE import) the Underworld games I have on an old compilation 'The Ultimate RPG Collection', the 'Worlds Of' games are free downloads here on GOG and I have the special installation CD for U9 that was sent to people who registered their copy of the gane in the first few weeks after launch. But to have them all in one place.......... too much temptation! It's just gotta be done!

I've played both games but only finished Risen 1 thus far..

Risen 1 was excellent. In terms of gameplay it's very similar to the Gothic series, killing monsters, questing, crafting, alchemy, there were even jobs you could do in the city, which you don't see too often in other RPGs. The quests were varied and plentiful, the NPC-dialogues are mostly well-written.

The storyline itself (you wake up on a beach after getting shipwrecked, you don't know your name etc.) isn't really special at the beginning but it picks up quickly after you meet the two opposing factions in the game, the story alters a bit depending on which you choose to align to around mid-game.

The best thing about the game imo was the open world and especially the city you get to explore rather early on, it really feels inhabited and a lot of care was given to fill it with little details, I love exploring/side-questing in RPGs the most, so this factor really appealed to me.

A small gripe was the controls for me, but I think that was because I played it on my 360 and the game is clearly layed out to be a PC game...

As for Risen 2, haven't finished it yet, got around 10 hours in it. Surely you know that the theme in this game is pirates, which is done quite well but the combat was miserably dumbed down to button mashing. I almost can't get myself to continue playing it, which is a shame, since the game world again is done pretty well, filled with hidden details in both the wilderness and the small village I got to explore until now..

Hope this helps :)

PS: I don't think there was excessive gore in any of the games, at least nothing that I noticed specifically :)

Enforced co-op? Oh boy, I get Resident Evil 5 deja vu. That game seriously sucked on single-player.

Thanks! That is exactly the information I was looking for. I do like open play, exploring and choices that determine the direction the game. Done, I'm getting Risen.

Gore doesn't bother me too much, I can ignore it. But if I can turn it off I will.

Yeah, I went to the link you gave and checked it out. Went to the forum and read a post called Message to the Devs. Quite pointed in his remarks. The community seems to think it is a money grab. It has scoring and achievements instead of good old fashioned looting and killing which is the point of hack'n'slash!

I'm trying to buy the D & D master set, but the price isn't correct. It's wanting $21.10 even though I own half of them. :/ Anyone else have this issue? Don't want to miss out on this
