IAmSinistar: It's is, and great atmosphere too. The DOS version actually looks quite good too, which is unusual since usually the Amiga version is the best.
Ahh, seeing this box art, I now remember this game. It was great fun! Ditto about Amiga typically being the best version possible :)
I think Red Baron 1 is the only flight sim of any kind (including underwater and space sim) that I played the entire campaign. I usually get stuck on a mission in those kind of games and I eventually get bored repeating it again and again.
avatar
RWarehall: I know I've played a fair number of WW1 dogfight games and I recall having the same problem. Played a lot of Wings on the Amiga, I think Red Baron, I recall that issue, but a lot of it has to do with the genre.
That's true. I remember a lot of these games were highly praised for their realistic simulation of 'the wire-and-canvas-death-trap experience' (well-put IAmSinistar).

RWarehall: The guns are mounted between the wings, so in order to aim to hit anyone you have to fly right at them.
It could have been much worse:

RWarehall: Part of the art of a WW1 game is knowing when to turn away.
I think I crashed just about every time I made a turn. :P

skeletonbow: Be sure to check out Lockon Modern Air Combat too.
Thanks skeletonbow, I'll make a note of that. :)

Home for lunch, just in time for the Red Baron pack! (only been a 2+day wait)

skeletonbow: It's not a GOG game, but I own Pacific Fighters on DVD and it's a decent WW2 era fighter game sim.
avatar
Lemon_Curry: Cool, thanks skeletonbow. I just looked it up and found out it's based on the IL-2 Sturmovik engine and now that I've read a few of the GOG reviews for that particular one I'm thinking it might be a game to my liking.
Actually, the above mentioned Pacific Fighters is included in the Il-2 1946, which is available here on GOG. It is true, that it is a realistic as a computer game can be.
Glad to see this much love for a flight sim on GOG! Shame there aren't many in their catalog...

popperik: Although the countdown says 48 hours, in the news section they only speak of 24 hours.

"Something BIG and EXCITING will happen in 24 hours"

Mr.Caine: Free game giveaway?
Jack Keane copies for everyone!

I agree! I loved this game as well as Aces of the Pacific, KoTS, and to a lesser degree Chuck Yaeger

Great, thanks mate! But how on earth did I manage to miss it three times during the flash sales?

Well at least it's not WWI realism. :)

Chuck Yeager Sims brings back some memories. Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Simulator was rough on the eyes but still fun!

And with that revelation I have redeemed the provisional IL-2 Sturmovik key I picked up. :)

I agree. I had hoped that the release of F117 was an indication of more to come ( Falcon 3.0 , F15 II/III , Gunship / G. 2000 for instance ), but nothing yet ....
