zuhutay: Alan Wake giveway?!?

I missed it, too :(
avatar
jpelgrom: It was available for free for 36 minutes on the 25th of June (length of a flash sale block).
Was this only announced on twitter? Not nice when such announcements only happen on proprietary services. Announcements should at least also be made on the GOG home page! Please GOG, this also has something to do with freedom and independence. ;)
Thank you GOG for such a great summer sale!

My library increased significantly, and my wish list got shorter. :)

I picked up:
Wing Commander bungle
Leisure Suit Larry bundle
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Masters of Orion 1 & 2
Capitalism Plus
Capitalism II
Galactic Civilizations 1

And I was able to get 3 of the 4 free flash giveaways (only missed out on the Alan Wake 30min giveaway, kind of sneaky LOL), so all together a pretty great summer sale IMHO.

Thanks again, GOG is awesome!

So I checked the Divinity release thread. It seems that the Divinity: Original Sin is going to be released on gog.com (today, tomorrow) only for kickstarter supporters. Everybody else will be able to buy the game on 31th of August (released on Steam and everywhere else today) when gog galaxy client is going to be released which multiplayer option Divinity: Original Sin will be using with gog version of the game. Basically gog is shooting themselves in the knee. I think most people won't wait two more months to buy and play the game.

skeletonbow: Yep, I just happened to catch up on that probably the same time you were reading it too. :) Good news for the Kickstarter backers, but it seems everyone else isn't too pleased with having to wait until Aug 31 for the game to roll out for general purchase. I'm neutral personally as I wasn't going to buy it immediately myself, but sad to see so many people upset by the unexpected delay.

If it were 10-15 years ago and I was eagerly awaiting the release and chomping at the bit for some day-1 game play I might have felt similarly perhaps. I seem to have grown a lot more patient in these last 15 years though and have more of a "meh, shit happens" calming peace of mind now though. :)

Personally I think everyone should totally buy Postal 2 and take some of their anger and frustration out by pouring gas on people and setting them on fire (in the game!) and whatnot. The big Postal 2 patch is coming soon here too, any day, and if it is late people can go postal about it until it actually gets released, and then go postal even more! :)
So if ks backers get it now then my only assumption is that the game isn't finished. What difference does it make between ks backers being able to download it the same way the rest of us can? All they have to do is unlock it for the rest of us, or maybe go screw themselves. I'll spend my tight cash on option B which was around the same time this game released. Being patient is not the problem, it's the fact that this is the second bloody time they 'delayed' it for stupid reasons.

IAmSinistar: Good, though tiring, sale. Great for newcomers and regulars alike in terms of game deals. Perhaps not as exciting as Insomnia, but then it's just a small cadre of us hardcore GOGnards who demand to be entertained by sale mechanics. :)
It all depends :). For me the slower speed and the repetitions, especially of the bundles, were nice to not miss too much (besides most of the freebies) while travelling around. I guess I would have gone mad when I would have been on travel during the insomnia sale. Would have missed much more. So all in all a nice sale for me. Thanks GOG!
avatar
eiii: Was a good summer sale, even when I was on vacation the last 2 weeks and travelling around. I still got internet access in the hotels occasionally (@GOG: your web site is a pain on slow internet links :P) and bought several games. I even got Magrunner for free. But what were the other 3 free games? And what was the Adrenaline Rush?
avatar
Matruchus: There were four free games next to Magrunner:
Stil Life 2
Omerta
Torchlight
Alan Wake American Nightmare

No idea what Adrenaline Rush was.
Adrenaline Rush was the name giving to the day when they gave out the 4 games for free. :)
Thanks to GoG I now have enough new games to avoid being outside!
I definately went overboard but i think i will have alot of fun. Thanks to all the staff of Gog for the great sale.
I was very disappointed in steam sale this time around so GOG restored my faith once again with much more reasonable pricing for oz :)

Well, I didn't really anticipate that. That's just weird. Hopefully they'll come to their senses and release the IP and single-player version ASAP with the Galaxy stuff and estimated date tucked in the info.

As as Kickstarter backer, I'm set, but I think that's just weird the way it's stated now. Sure, they put a ton of effort into two-player functionality, but it's not like it's not a worth playing single.

The game is finished, as it is available as an official release on Steam right now. Game publishers have to do additional steps to produce and quality test their games on GOG and other platforms, and while some have the manpower to do that simultaneously in parallel with their Steam or other builds, many do not have that level of resources and produce builds for different distributors as best they can with their limited resources.

Larian promised their Kickstart backers a GOG option and they've got a GOG build which supports LAN and Direct IP only from what I'm able to gather, and that is being made available to the Kickstarter backers today sometime here on GOG. It is not 100% clear why they have chosen to wait until they're able to integrate Galaxy support into the game to do a full blown launch here on GOG that anyone can buy instead of allowing people to buy the release right now and just get the Galaxy support as a future update. There might be technical reasons for that, or support manpower or something else we're not aware of. I haven't seen any official reason given yet for this personally though, but it would be nice if they would be kind enough to clarify it for everyone.

I think it's probably unfortunate though as Steam will undoubtedly get more sales and GOG will lose out from people who just want the game immediately and don't want to wait and are willing to get it from Steam than to wait for it to show up on GOG, but that doesn't mean that it was an evil decision or anything. Sometimes companies weigh different options on how to do something and make a choice with good intentions that ends up having unforeseen consequences that appear short-sighted after the fact. It is very easy to make such mistakes when you're under enormous pressure with looming deadlines and people breathing fire down your neck too. :)

I do have to say though... When will game companies and other software publishers ever learn... the best release date to have for a game as championed by id Software in the 90s, is "When it's ready.", although I am personally fond of telling people "Julembruary 34th" myself. Or "Valve time" as it is sometimes known also. :)

One thing I would like to add to all of this that makes it even sadder - the game is available drm-free on Steam as promised in the Divinity: Original Sin on Kickstarter.

Yes, the 'give it to everyone now and patch in galaxy support later on' would have been the most sensible option. Galaxy does not apply to me at all as I like to LAN with a second person in my house. I could have been doing that for two months by the time the game 'releases'

Yes, it does seem a bit odd to make it available to some, knowing that everyone will know this. :) It's possible too that there is still just some mis-communication happening. I'm sure that within a few days based on community feedback both here and on their own forums that any misunderstandings and mis-communications will likely be sorted out though. Hopefully part of that involves seeing the game made available for anyone and everyone to purchase here now, with Galaxy support coming as an update at a later date.

It's hard to understand why they would release it the way it appears they are. I'm wondering if people who bought Dragon Commander here on GOG were upset because they couldn't play with people on Steam without using LAN or Direct-IP mode perhaps, and they wanted to ensure that customers who do plan on playing online multiplayer with expectations to play against people on Steam can do so soon as they buy it, so they decided to hold off on the full blown release, but wanted to honour their Kickstarter promise for the game to be available on GOG right away. Just pure speculation on my part.

It would seem that either way, whatever they would have decided to do would ultimately result in some number of customers being upset. Either people upset they could get the game here right away but not be able to play against friends who have it on Steam except for Direct-IP/LAN mode, or people upset to have to wait to get the game until the end of August.

I'll predict one more thing though... lets say the next game in the series after Original Sin is released on both Steam and GOG at the exact same milliesecond with the exact same features present on both, made available for pre-release order on both at the same time and the same in every other imaginable aspect, that the game is completely bug free and every feature they promise is delivered perfectly. There will be people who find a reason (or make one up) to complain about it anyway, so long as there are human beings that desire video games alive on Earth. ;)
NO! Thank YOU for Screamer, completing my Rayman collection with Rayman 2 and Origins, and Luftrausers! Also the freebies, even if some won't work on my laptop, it's good to have them for when upgrade time comes! The sale was awesome
