LeoLR: I wonder how people will react to this movie bundle...
Why react? I'm sure there are people interested for the movies..
avatar
RWarehall: There are bundles, even a movie bundle
avatar
IAmSinistar: They did not show up initially for me when I refreshed the page.

IAmSinistar: No interest here. They didn't bundle the one worth watching, Dark Dungeons. The one on Japanese arcades looks passably interesting, but most of the rest look like gamer circle jerks.
True, but "the gamers" ones might be good for a few laughs. If you watch it with friends, and are properly "seasoned".

Hell it's the kind of movie that is most funny when you're high.

But then all movies are funny while high. Even mexican soap operas.

No I will not explain how I know that, I just do.

That's probably true, but they didn't bundle those either. :) I did get the free one from the stamps promo, so at least I can check one out and see if I like the series.

EDIT: Just realised we might have been talking with crossed wires. I am referring to the series here actually known as "The Gamers". :)

So was I actually. I was thinking of the whole movie catalog, not just the ones included in the bundle. Basically saying that maybe they have one or two more movies there that are actually worth watching.

Out of those in the bundle though, I quite agree. The only one remotely interesting seems to be the japanese one. The rest, I can't help but feel they reek of onanistic movie making, and pandering to their specific niche audience.

the.kuribo: I might get this one, 3 of the titles are the ones I've been most interested in amongst the video game documentary pickings, and none of them are on Netflix yet.

I'm wondering this because we saw people sharpening torches and igniting pitchforks ready to invade a neighbouring country back when GOG announced the movie section.

I do not dismiss the movies and I keep a eye on them. Maybe one day I buy something from there.

Agreed on all the above. The reviews on 100 Yen sound decent, so it could be worth grabbing at the 60% individual price. I've got time to weigh the decision, thankfully.

Why so anti documentary? Is it because you already know the stories involved?

The Story of Mojang looks interesting to me as I remember the beginnings of Minecraft in 2009 and thinking to myself what is this alpha game they are releasing here, and it coming from some very humble beginnings to suddenly seeing it being mentioned all over the place. I think it would be interesting to know the story behind its meteoric rise, as it's a game which I never really had much interest in and did not follow other than to know that it existed in its infancy and then somehow became a household name.

King of Arcades is a project I've been following since its Kickstarter origins, as I'm a bit of an 80's/early 90's arcade junky and still love the sigt and feel of those old cabs. I also know some people who are into arcade cab restorations and collecting, so this documentary is sort of a nice insight into that.

100 Yen is another interesting looking film that explores the Japanese arcade scene, which I'm fairly familiar with but I do not know much about the hardcore crowd.

Pixel Poetry looks like a fluff piece. But I'm not afraid of fluff, and sometimes I enjoy taking it in.

Once Upon Atari looks potentially boring, but as the Atari 2600 was the first console my family owned it's a part of my roots man, my roots.
Ah, it`s just a triple turbo rotation, but still the same games in the first batch, such a shame (and wasted opportunity too).
Everyone was secretly hoping they will mix it up a little bit more, with so many other games to choose from.

I love documentaries, they are one of my favourite genres of film. But I detest hagiography, ego stroking, and lickspittle fandom. Documentaries need to be objective and balanced to be interesting, and most of the ones bundled do not seem to fit the bill. Only the one on Japanese arcades seems to have the required distance to be palatable to me.

Also, the focuses of the others just don't appeal to me on subject matter. A retrospective on Atari would be good, if handled in a different way than the offered one appears to be. Likewise with Pixel Poetry. The rest seem like they'd be interesting only to someone whose TV remote is covered in Cheetos dust.

I think gaming is a maturing artform and it definitely deserves serious cinematic consideration. But recent events have shown that gaming as a culture has a long way to go towards respectability and responsibility. Perhaps when that time comes we'll get the docus we deserve.

Verdeloth:
Per KaneTheGoth's post from GOG's Facebook page:
avatar
KaneTheGoth: "PROMO ALERT: In just half an hour we're putting on an extreme sale that will last 48 hours. It's your last chance to get your favorite titles at the lowest possible prices!

-- 29 games on sale at once
-- sales last from 40 minutes to 6 hours
-- as many as 250 titles incoming

Good luck and good deals to you all!"
Sounds to me like, after this 48-hour stretch, all of these sale items will be gone and replaced with entirely new ones for the final day(s) of the sale. So, while this might not be what you were hoping for at the moment, it might end up being what you want by the end of it.

Allow me to intrude if you will. I do not think it is so much an anti-documentary sentiment as a jaded expectation of what they have to offer.

I will give out an example. Some time ago, I watched the "Bronies" documentary. Yes I am ever so slightly a brony. Looking back, I think I was more attracted to the huge community that had appeared around it than the cartoon itself. But I diggress. I watched it and what I found was a pile of self-ingratiating sentimental tripe, that felt more like a hugbox in cinematographic form than an informative documentary.

What I got from that was that; any documentary created by a group of people with passionate views about the subject they're reporting on, will be inevitably skewed by their viewpoints.

So take those kind of documentaries with a grain of salt.

EDIT: Mr. Space Cheese said it a hundred times better than I could have. I even learned a new word.

Interesting that some flash sales will last only 40 minutes; maybe we will see more desireable or unique titles pop up for the shorter duration.

I doubt they'd put Two Worlds on flash sale for the x-teenth time at a super quick 40 minutes only; fingers cross for something cool that I don't have.
