donsanderson: Just took a closer look at "Don't Starve", I always thought it was another of the 'survival horror' games I don't care for.
Actually looks rather fun. Opinions? Fast, slow, hard, easy, etc?
Hard. You die from everything. Starving, being cold, going mad, the dark. Accidentally poking a pig.
And then even if you do everything right, you get randomly attacked by wild dog things in the middle of the night.
But, it's a great game. It's huge and you can have a lot of fun puzzling out how to survive another day.
You get better every time you die because you learn a little more every time you play.
From shaving your beard and saving the cuttings to make things to making sure you don't eat the monster meat... :P

genkicolleen: This really is great, Stilton, I'm so glad you've made your presence known around here ^__^
That's the nicest thing someone has said to me in ages. Thank you very much!

genkicolleen: It's interesting. Steam recently had a free weekend for Don't Starve, and I tried it then. Basically, you try not to die for as long as possible. Gather all of the resources you can, build new tools, farming equipment, weapons, a home fort, etc. Fend off enemies and monsters, and Don't Starve!
Thanks!

Getcomposted: The third time the update notification turned up today, I invited it to take a running jump and... *rude gesture*
I feel the same :-( Looks like we're stuck with it until the Mac update has done its stint.
avatar
Stilton: If any Witcher EE owners (PC version) are wondering about the reminder for a non-existent update hanging around on their Account tab, its there because a Mac update is available and the PCers among us can't, for some reason, be excluded from the announcement. I just had a very pleasant exchange with one of GOG's GOGlodites who said he hoped it wasn't too much of an annoyance. If this has been stated before, please just pretend I'm a dim-witted relative, smile sweetly and pat me on the head.

EDIT: last line altered to prevent potential upset (didn't think, sorry)
What I'm wondering about is why Geralt felt the need to remind us at least half a dozen times today that he got an update two days ago of which he also had made a big deal out with recurring reminders.

Heh. I'm just glad to finally know why the reminder won't go away! :D

What GetComposted said. Its a great game, but not easy. There's no real tutorial or instructions, so you just kind of figure it out on your own. There is a wiki with all sorts of info about the game, but I enjoyed it more before I read the wiki. The self-discovery was very rewarding.

Thanks everyone for the comments about the oddworld games - it looks like I might not be done with this sale yet!

Niggles: You seem to have pretty good taste (as to a few others) :D -- im curious are there game types or genre's you wont touch?.
Thank you for the nice comment. :)

There's only a few genres of games that don't interest me - sports games, modern war simulators, endless runners, and bullet-hell twitch shooters. But even then, if the game does something fresh, I might still pick it. I'm also not a fan of the current AAA games that focus on thuggish "heroes", antisocial behaviour, and crude sexism. I find entertainment in original and creative visions, not simulated crassness.

Basically I have a very wide palate for games. Some genres I love to death, others have to be exceptional for me to pick up a game in. But a good game is a good game, and I try to call them out, regardless of what they are, be they RPG, FPS, HOG, RTS, P&C, or something else.

EDIT: Oh, and to add to the recent recommendations, Don't Starve is great, even though you die a lot (pretty much every time you play). Same can be said of FTL. In some permadeath games you do better because you can unlock or carry stats over from previous plays (Risk of Rain, Rogue Legacy). But with Don't Starve and FTL, your subsequent plays are better solely because you become a better player. That's awesome right there.

Thank you. Some of your tastes are mostly similar to mine (endless runners should die a horrible death....) which i why i tend to nod when you say something is good :). Btw can you recommend a HOG type game? (i realise GOG doesnt have any but i dabbled a bit in the past and didnt find them too bad.. despite it feeling like pixel hunting at times lol)

Oh *I* can recommend some good HOG's, but I need to know what kind you like. Straight HOG's (very little interaction), IHOG-lites (light interaction), IHOG's (heavy adventure feel), FROG's (FRagmented Object Games), etc? What's your preference? I have dozens and dozens of reviews for the genre, so I'm sure I can find something you'll like :D Oh, and I can direct you to a couple of freebies on Big Fish, too!
Thanks to IAmSinistar's eclectic tastes and recommendations I nabbed a copy of Kingdom Rush, which in an earlier round I had dismissed as being not my kind of thing, but which I subsequently investigated, finding a rather elucidating video on YouTube which reassured me that I'd probably actually like it. It reminded me a lot of Plants vs Zombies, which I played to death a couple of years back and which had given me a ton of pleasure. Its nice to be around other gamers because you can pick up insights into things you would normally not think about ;-)

Sounds like genkicolleen is your woman for this task! I only have a small collection of HOGs and haven't gotten around to any of them yet. Mostly I collect the ones with horror or supernatural settings that I like. I am especially drawn to nautical horror.

And please share your recommendations here genkicolleen, I'm always happy to learn about games I might have missed that are worth looking into!
