CarrionCrow: Sympathies when it comes to poor sleep, but you've got the double consolation prize - the item as well as the rarity of a partner who's close enough to your own wavelength to give you the heads-up.

katya_stevens: He knows enough to not judge on games sales. I wasn't actually expecting him to keep an eye on sales so him telling me was a nice surprise.

(As for the bad sleep, things are stressful at home which has been impacting his sleep. He's a light sleeper to begin with, so if I'm having a bad night, he's guaranteed to have one as my tossing and turing keeps him awake).
Gut-check on the fly analysis - he sounds like a cool guy.
My apologies that you and yours are dealing with stressful garbage. I hope it improves, and quickly.

Stilton: Market pressures can unfortunately warp people's sensibilities (developers as well as buyers) to the point that what was good about a great many older titles, in a word, heart, has been replaced by formulaic horse-sh!t and slick visuals. There seems to be too much care these days about form instead of content. The indies are doing their bit (some, at least) to counter this, but what game makers generally rarely, if ever, find is what they probably can't, and that is nostalgia. They can maybe produce a pastiche, but what most if not all of us here love is that sense and look of old. And that is something which can be kept alive only by enthusiasts. Unfortunately, its called progress.
avatar
CarrionCrow: Indeed. That links back to what I've been saying with infinityeight. It's the difference between a construct and an experience, going through the motions versus actually giving a damn.
And yes, marketing is definitely a big factor in the perpetuation of a "we aren't going to make anything real, and the customers should be content with the insanely hollow, repetitively presented shooty-shooty-bang-bang flashing lights/glittering hi-def set pieces we charge them out the nose for" attitude. Marketing tells the masses that Call of Mediocrity version 14.0.1 is the very best they can get, people don't look for anything more, the publishers get paid by the truckload, the corporations (demonstrating all the imagination and creativity of a puddle of rapidly drying dog urine) set plans in motion for the next ten sequels, all of them virtually identical, while allocating another 50 million for the marketing campaign, and on and on it goes.
One person's progress is another person's devolution.
As for the indies, a lot of them are guilty of the same thing, only in a different direction. They build constructs out of the pieces of the past, and it turns into one long series of "Hey, hey, see what we did there? Doesn't that remind you of what you played when you were a kid/teenager/whatever? It's just like what you used to like! That makes it great by default!"
I agree, and it makes me think of one of the things in gaming that I most dread, and that is the latest 'wow-gotta-have-it-now!" update on Gamespot or IGN about some forthcoming blockbuster that'll run about 20,000 G, have visuals more real than reality and blow your mind with its total and utter vacuity. I was going to say I don't know where that kind of mindset comes from, its so alien to me, but in all honesty I don't care. I played Nox the other day and it was so filled with humour, fun, good ideas, simplicity and warm character that the chumps who make these big in your face money burners that destroy too much of what could happen (and be better) can go on till the end of time, I'll always have the games I buy here to keep me happy and content.

I tune all that crap out. It's hype constructed by professional manipulators and projected through puppets (either unwitting or complicit), and I have no interest in it.
Gods, I remember Nox. Bought that on disc from (crap, where did I get it from....Best Buy? Might've been there, back in the days when you could get a double jewel-case of Fallout 1 & 2 or Planescape Torment & Soulbringer for 6 dollars) some store, played the crap out of it. Saw that on here and had to have it. Definitely an example of why having a sizable GOG stockpile is a very, very good thing.

Note the IMMEDIATE change in attitude? A decent and simple old game and we've gone all warm and fluffy...

Of course. Nox is a good game. Like you said, it's a fun game. It has no pretension, no soulless artifice to it. It is what it is. You put it on and enjoy yourself. The story's simple but it works just fine since the game isn't trying to convey some massive level of depth, the gameplay's good, there's variety involved from the class options to the skills available.
Think I'm going to take a moment to reinstall Nox now....;)

moonshineshadow: ok... somehow I am over looking the post with the list to see how often games came up already. So could anyone be nice and tell me if there was any game on flash sale this weekend that had not been on flash sale before? Thanks :-)
American Conquest + Fight Back was also new on Saturday.

I remember a time when AAA games had a soul. Seemed the old Blizzard North games, they obviously cared, there was something unique. Old Westwood games. Certain teams, certain brands were almost always worth playing. Too bad there are few reliable developers these days.

Right, cook up some bacon, put on your white t-shirt with the green trim and watch out for the vortex that opens in your living room wall...
Morning, Peeps! (Yes, the yellow marshmallow chicks.) Everyone ready for another day? Hoping for a bundle I don't already own, and maybe a few more new Flash Deal additions. And don't forget your stamp, like I did once already...

Really glad I didn't have a mouthful of caffeinated beverage when reading that. Otherwise, I'd be scrambling to clean my monitor.
Well, 30 more minutes to the next daily deals...

Hey, if they don't happen you always have us, toots.

(As far as I am aware, never in Norse legend has a Viking ever said that.)

Good morning to you as well. (Is it weird that I just envisioned a giant, menacing metal face of doom flying up to me and when I think it's going to kill me, it breaks into a big smile and starts asking me how my day's going? That might be weird.....
Nevermind.)
Still plugging away as consciousness permits. It's like Insomnia mixed with hiking through a waist-deep swamp of molasses.
The thing about old games is that developers couldn't rely on having the most amazing graphics or full orchestral movie-type score. All they had to sell a game was the gameplay itself. If there was no story there there no game. Hence we have classics like the Ultima series with hundreds of hours of gameplay in comparison with, for example. the recent release 'The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter' that has only 6-8 hours of gameplay but the most gorgeous graphics and music.

And Day 6 begins with a Day 3 repeat, I'd expect more of the same. The missing Day 1 (non-zero hour game) did not show yesterday. Does this mean it will wait for Day 7? One new flash deal Day 4 but 3 new ones day 5, still hope for more new games today...

It's 5:38 am....I've barely slept in two days....my list still isn't even close to completed....I'm drinking coffee out of a cup large enough to put a jumbo-sized can of soup into....and I just put on Aqua's Barbie Girl.

With enough sleep deprivation, you can get a dose of Insomnia madness out of any prolonged sale.
