gandalf.nho: I have all the Fanatsy bundle except Lords of MIdnight, how's the gameplay and difficulty?
Well... I'm definitely biased because I have it on C64 and it's one of the most epic C64 games ever. I was actually hesitant about buying it (got it during insomnia sale) because I was afraid that a remake would ruin it. What a pleasant surprised, they only polished it just a bit to make UI more friendly but they didn't change the gameplay.

What can I say, the most important and entertaining part of the game is figuring out what you should do. How to manage your heroes, where to send them first, how to manage your armies etc. So at the beginning it will be extremely difficult, you will get massacred and probably you won't even know why ;) After a few tries you may realize that you actually accomplished something. Won a few battles, rescued a few commanders... You will still have to experiment a lot where to send your heroes but after some time you will combine your experiences from numerous tries and finally you will win. Then you will try again to minimize your loses. After some time you'll be able to beat the game virtually every time and the way you prefer (there are two possible ways to win).

You can, however, read some hints about the game and start winning much earlier. In my humble opinion it doesn't make a lot of sense (but of course to each his own!). You see, battles are automated - it only matters how many troops and heroes you brought with you and their condition (morale, tiredness). So the game is basically about learning how your enemy fights, how to engage and defeat him. The game is randomized (the enemy may choose different routes) so it's important to be flexible. But if you read all about it before even starting the game... there is just not much left... Yes, you will beat the game much earlier but I would say it's not worth it.

EDIT: I hope it's obvious from my post but it won't hurt to emphasize: I do love this process of learning how the game works. It's very rewarding to figure out everything on your own!

jackster79: Having said that, I have been reading the user reviews on Port Royal 2, and how its combat is very limiting. Can anyone who has played the game offer up their opinions on that particular mechanic? Is it as bad (i.e. frustration-inducing) as I am interpreting those reviews to be, or are there ways to game the system to alleviate it somewhat?
It's quite frustrating and very unrealistic. It basically comes to this: your enemy will fight with every ship at his disposal. You, on the other hand, can control only one ship even if you have more warships in your fleet. The only thing you can do is to switch your ship. So if you are heavily damaged you may choose to pick another ship and fight with it (you cannot go back to any ship that you've already changed!). It doesn't sound good, does it? It's very bad at the beginning, when you are not experienced. After some time you won't have a problem with sinking the entire fleet with one or two warships. AI is pretty dumb ;)

jackster79: In addition, is there any reason to get Patrician 1 + 2 if I already have Patrician 3?
Patrician 1 is a different game. Patrician 3 is basically the same as 2 but polished. I think in Germany Patrician 3 was released as an expansion of 2 and I may say it makes a lot more sense ;)

I still prefer Patrician 3 over 1 but I know people who think other way around.

Shit, I just bought something else. :P I'll try tomorrow.
The only games from the fantasy bundle I don't own are King of the Dragon Pass and Lords of Midnight. They both look good but I fear They may be a bit too old-school for me. Any thoughts?

great and unique point and click game. it's worth checking out if you like the genre.
Does anyone own all the games in the Fantasy through History Bundle? I´m interested in Inquisitor but don´t want to buy the other games along wih it. Would pay via paypal or buy a game of similar value in return.

king of dragon pass is a blast. but you'll have to really spend time with it in order to learn what works and what doesn't...and why. because something not working in one play through may work in another depending on what else you're up to. and the art is really cool too. it's basically a menu-driven game with lots of options although it may seem limited at first. great...GREAT game.

i own lords of midnight here as well but haven't played it much. i'm not someone who grew up playing it either so i can't comment.

I was afraid of that. Time being scarce enough as it is, I have to be choosy with what I play, and games that are obnoxious in the beginning for no good reason tend to get the short shrift from me. Will stick with Port Royal 1 then.

Interesting. Will have to look more into how 1 is different.

Thank you very much for your input on everything. :-)

Agreed! Very intriguing adventure game.

Hm, the Sail, Trade and Plunder bundle for tomorrow looks interesting, might get that if it wins. But come on Gog, give us an adventure game bundle in the voting, pretty please! :-) So far GK1-Cognition were the only adventure games in the daily deals, I wantz more! ;-) Luckily I've picked up Book of Unwritten Tales yesterday and Stacking today out of my daily surprise boxes, so I'm set for a bit. :-)

GOG really wants me to buy System Shock 2 and Lilly Looking Through. They keep showing up in my gift boxes over and over.

You can find my opinion about the game here. To keep it short: we may say that the game is an elaborate riddle. The most interesting/entertaining part is to figure everything out on your own. You'll fail a lot before you know how to beat the game but the very process of learning is very entertaining. At least in my opinion ;)

Okay then I might well go for it (I'll just wait to see if something better comes up on the next Steam rotation).

On that note Bulletstrom is on heavy discount over there right now. If gamers can look past the painful DRM (Many here won't) You have one of the best FPS games ever (Here's to hoping it come here some day).
Interesting that so many other just like myself own all the games in the deal except for Lord of Midnight. Apparently an updated (not graphically) version of the same named game that used to be played in cassette tapes. Wow. I do remember cassette tapes on computers. Anyways, I guess for a buck and change, it can't be helped.

Edit: Got Psychonauts instead on the surprise deals for $2.49. Oh well, that makes game number 3 so far in the sale.

Is there a list of Community Deal options that were not voted in anywhere? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ah, you lucky. I gettin Uplink constantly. As for System Shock, it was even cheaper several days ago, in "Santa will be scared" or something pack, for 2$.
Was really hoping for Valdis, but looks like i have to wait to get it somewhere else.
