I'm speechless. Next year the prize will go to Mother Nature.

Nah, she's a bitch. Do you know how many people she's killed over the last year?
But it was for greater good.

So what, maybe the rain should get the prize? ;p
I'm still waiting for the inevitable forum rant - not here, it has to be said, but possibly 4chan or the like - about how America did more for world peace than Europe ever did, how Germans are all Nazis, how the French are pussies and how Europe is the last bastion of socialism/communism and doesn't do anything for world peace.

The nobel prize is an idiot scam. I can't believe people actually give a shit about it...

Hilarious.

But hey, it's not like the prize had any credibility at all. Kissinger? Arafat? Obama?

Yeah it's hilarious. The current Peace Prize committee is lead by an inbred incompetent of an ex-politician;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torbj%C3%B8rn_Jagland

Basically everything he touches goes wrong. How he got the job I have no idea. To sweeten the deal, he's also the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. So basically he's giving the prize to himself.

I despise the guy with every inch of my being, and hope that the consequences of this disaster is that our right to give out the peace prize is permanently revoked.

I'm only surprised because these prizes should go to individuals. Giving a prize to a European Union is like pissing on all today's peace heros achievements and activists all over the world. Individuals, who risk their entire lives for peace mean nothing to the nobel commision... I
t's like I see this. Dalailama? Chinese/Russian opposition activists? Women fighting for their rights in Islamic countries? Diplomats who manage to ease the conflicts all over the world? Nah, forget them. EU ROCKS.

The Dalai Lama won the NBP back in '89, and I think it would be pointless if they awarded it to the same person more than once. Liu Xiaobo won it a couple of years back. I don't think it's ever been in the spirit of the prize to award the same prize several times over to different people for the same cause.

Ok, maybe it was a bad example. But don't we have enough dissidents all over the world to not water down the meaning of Nobel Peace Prize?

Don't we have people who create new UN treaties/resolutions to ensure world peace, as another example?

One of the reasons of creating Peace Prize is to honor the people who fight for peace and make them remembered.

Do we need to honor and remember about EU by giving such prize?

The prize has been a joke ever since they chose to award it to Yasser Arafat.

I think you're missing the point somewhat. The point of the Nobel Peace Prize is not really to just honour certain people or institutions, give them a pat on the back and say "good job". The point is to tell the world, "hey guys, look at this person/group, he/she/they have the right idea about how to bring peace to the world, he/she/they are an example to follow".

The reaction is the same shit every year. There are always people that decry the Prize as being meaningless because the winner wasn't in agreement with their political views.
Well of course it wins the Noble Peas prize. It grows the most Peas.
