In the meantime I've added up everything declared a "miss" so far (along with the actual list proper):

I'll make a guess soon, just let me look at this and see if I find a pattern. I think we're gonna have to track down the people who managed to solve the cat moustache puzzle in Gabriel Knight 3 by pure deduction alone to crack this one...
