I'm planing on buying a widescreen Monitor soon so I was wondering if 16:9 is supported in GOG games and in PC games in general.

Oh, and could you guys maybe recommend me a good monitor that will work great with my PC and PS3.
Right now I'm looking at Dell U2311H, I'm looking for performence not price.

I'd personally go 16:10 instead of 16:9 for the extra vertical pixels. I've personally had good luck with Samsung monitors. I'm using a SyncMaster T240HD, which includes a digital tuner, it's a couple years old, but it's still working as well as ever.

As for the PS3, as long as it has HDMI inputs you should be fine. I'd recommend getting a monitor that uses DVI input instead of RGB from the computer, but that'll depend upon what your video card supports.
It's different from game to game, but if a game already supports wide screen resolutions, then chances are it does support 16:9 resolutions as well as the "normal" 16:10 resolutions.
16:10 was the standard but manufacturers have all but phased the aspect ratio out so if you want a future proof monitor then go with 16:9.

Agreed.

As for GOG games, some support it and some don't. If a game does not natively support widescreen but can be made to do so you will surely find out how on www.widescreengamingforum.com.

Cool page!
I agree with 16:9. Also another vote for samsung. I have a synchmasterP20270 and its been working like a charm. Its about 2 years old. No problems and looks great.
Personally I'm no fan of the letterbox-looking aspect ratio that is16:9. But the others are right that it does seem to be in the process of being phased out. Personally, if I were to buy another monitor now it would be 16:10 also. But you won't be able to expect 100% support. Console ports will often be stretched to fit.

I don't know why you think it's letter box looking. The vast majority of films aspect ratio is 16:9. If anything, it's a natural aspect ratio. More screens are becoming 16:9 across the board to enjoy HD content who's original aspect ratio is 16:9. Now that's applying more and more to games.

Actually, all movies are either 1.85:1 or 2.39:1, not 16:9. The 16:9 aspect ratio is only used by TV shows broadcast in HD and console video games. That's why movies that are presented in their original aspect ratio on HDTVs do still have letterboxing.

The reason for the move to 16:9 is because they're cheaper to produce. A 22" 16:10 monitor has a larger viewable area than a 22" 16:9. Although I'm sure they're happy that people think that 16:9 is better.
If you're paying for 16:10, you'd might as well pony up for a IPS panel as well. You won't believe how much better they are until you have one, but only you know if your wallet can take the hit.

Seconded.
Personally i find 16:9 fine for any gog game i have played, I dont get games cut off by the sides like my mates dell 16:10 monitor on some resolutions BUT I am using 1280x1024 on a 22" monitor (yep 16:9) looks fine for me But it may not be the case with all 16:9 monitors

How do you figure? Screen size is the diagonal. A 16:10 screen is less wide but taller. A 16:9 is wider but less tall.
