NISA has been making a mess out of Falcom's latest entry on what's probably their biggest and most recognizable franchise, Ys, since the very beginning, especially on the PC side of things, with two delays already, one of them because they had to outsource since their PC division doesn't have the know-how to fix bugs and optimize the game.

A few days ago, they posted on twitter and facebook, saying the game is -- finally! -- releasing on Steam and GOG, after half a year of delays and excuses (one of the reasons Falcom sold NISA the rights to Ys VIII was the fact they promised a simultaneous console and PC release, among other things, namely localisation supporting not only English but French and Italian).

I pre-ordered the game on GOG for a number of reasons. First of all, GOG is my digital store of choice and, given the opportunity, I'd rather have my games on GOG than anywhere else. Secondly, I'm a huge Nihon Falcom fan, I own every official PC Ys release available in the West, and I would have bought Ys VIII regardless of publisher. But my main reason for doing this was to thank NISA for bringing Ys VIII to GOG, alongside all the other Ys games published by XSEED already in here; I wanted to give them a vote of confidence while showing GOG is a viable store, albeit smaller than the behemoth that is Steam. So, I've been waiting patiently ever since September, enduring NISA's delays and postponing excuses, their downright disrespect of the PC customer base as a whole, while they kept ignoring us and avoiding all sorts of communication.

Which brings us to the present day. Friday, April 13th, a few days after the aforementioned official tweet. Great, it's finally releasing on the PC, Steam and GOG both getting it on April 16. Steam's Ys VIII store page was updated, same as GOG's, both now have April 16 as the release date. Thing is, on GOG's library, the release date is set to June 4. Both on the GOG site and on Galaxy (the web version even has a countdown timer, telling me the game will be out in 52 days). Now, is this yet another one of NISA's blunders, or is this one on GOG? I've been trying to get a hold of someone in some official capacity over at NISA's, but they're still avoiding touching the subject of PC Ys VIII as much as possible, so no luck on that front. The Steam forums are full of kids and fanboys that can barely write and/or understand English, and the GOG's Ys VIII subforum is basically dead, so I'm bringing this here.

Not that any "blue" would care to answer me, but one can try. All I want to know is whether the game is getting released on GOG next Monday, or if I'll have to wait until June 4th in order to play it. If the latter is the case, whose fault is it, GOG's or NISA's?

I'm betting the house on NISA - imcompetent fuckwits they are...
Still - what do GOG know that we don't? If there's a publisher enforced delay for the Steam / Switch release... then screw everyone that had a hand in this clusterfuck... I be out

It could be something as simple as someone forgot to update the store page on GOG's library page. Stranger things have happened.

EDIT: But this is also why I got it on PS4 and not GOG, because I knew it'd be delayed. NISA does not do pc stuff well, from what I understand, and it looks like they proved me right.

GoG probably figured it would be easier to wait until April 16th to change it if it gets released rather than change it now, find out it will be delayed and then change it back all the while getting flak why it's not out despite the timer saying zero.

At least that's what I would do - this being NISA and all.

I don't have any current gen console, so I can't play games on any of them.

And I won't stand for the "what's the problem? It's a Japanese game, after all, they're only big on consoles" argument, I don't really care for it. First of all, they announced the game for PC, so at least stick to your word and deliver -- or make up for your blunder somehow, just don't treat PC customers like second class ones. Secondly, Nihon Falcom *did* start out as a PC game dev. Ys, Dragon Slayer/Xanadu/Legend of Heroes, Brandish, every single one of these was originally developed by Falcom for the PC, not consoles -- so, well, even though they have been focusing on consoles lately, it would be nice if publishers respected Falcom's PC history and pedigree.

Let's see. Hopefully this is just an oversight on GOG's part, and I'll finally get to play the game next week.

[EDIT] right now I got an email from GOG about upcoming games, and Ys VIII is listed as releasing on April 16. Let's see.

I'm thinking it's just something like the date was mis-entered as 16-04-18 in MM-DD-YY format, and since there's no month 16, it got changed to June.

Could be, this is the most logical explanation for this I've read, so far, thanks for the insight!

Yeah, for my organization's website, the tool we use has some weird quirks when trying to type in dates and times, I figured something similar happened here. :)
Sorry, Groze, I wasn't trying to give them a free pass. I was just explaining why I got my copy on PS4 :)

The date mixup sounds likely, what SCPM posted. I'd have to agree this seems like probably what happened.
An update: yesterday, even though the GOG download page for Ys VIII was counting down to June 4th, the store page listed April 16 as the release date. As of today, both the download and store pages for Ys VIII on GOG say it will be out on June 4.

I really want to believe this is due to the likely MM-DD-YY vs DD-MM-YY mistake, but things aren't looking good, to be fair, and since it's the weekend, no one on GOG in some official capacity can provide us with a definite answer regarding this issue.

I'm willing to accept a one or two days delay on GOG, considering they have to wrap the game into their own proprietary installer, but hopefully we won't have to wait until June while Steam users get the game this Monday...

Also, some people on the Steam Ys VIII community forum noted there's no countdown on the Steam game page, and started speculating GOG somehow "leaked the actual release date, June 4th". I still think the date mixup is the most probable cause. At least I want to believe that... at this point, I just want to be able to play the game, poor localization or not, buggy or not, well optimized or not. Just release it, already. Pull a Bethesda and just let the modding community fix the game for you.

Really? Storepage still shows April 16 for me.

Edit: Oh, you mean the "will be available for download".

Yeah, it says April 16 in the game info, still, but June 4 under the Buy option section...

I see. In that case, we'll only learn on Monday whether it's just a GOG mistake or intentional on NISA's part, as I doubt you'll be getting any answers on a weekend.
