My wish is probably a little bit strange... and unusual...

I love games! Not just PC games, but any kind. I see them as art. Not all of them I play through, and sometimes I see why they were ground braking at the time, but today the just aren't that great to play anymore... Still: I love games!

I noticed, that I increasingly buy new games when they are on sale. Rarely do I pay the full price. Some games that I played and loved so much, I bought a second time on a different platform, like Steam. (I have a Steam Deck, so...)

What I'd love to see: the chance to pay up after I've bought a game, when I find that said game really deserved it. I know, that's a bad example as it is a mainstream game, but the game I played not once or twice but more then three times already is Horizon: Zero Dawn. I got it when it was on sale. I really think that the development team should see how I appreciate what they did, so I'd like to pay the full price, now that I have played it so much: I'd like to "up may payment"...

Such a function would have to include the transparency to see where the money goes: I like it that GOG gets part of the sale price, naturally, and part of the up-payment. But I'd also like to see how much the developer studio gets.

The second function I'd love to finally get integrated seamlessly is a cloud savegames. Some games still don't get synchronized, and I don't know why. I also don't see the big problem: just symlink every savegame directory to a central cloud folder that is synchronized everytime I start GOG Galaxy. And I mean EVERY savegame directory! The GOG Galaxy client knows where the games are installed, and it should know where each game puts its savegames. Where is the problem?

Also, a cross-platform savegame synchronization with Steam, Origin/EA, Epic, Uplay and so forth would be nice, so that I get to play wherever I want with the same savegames – with the option, to turn this feature off.

Third wish, not third priority though: get the best port of every good old game! Some games were better on different platforms, like Amiga or FM Towns. Sometimes those games work well with an Amiga emulator or ScummVM, so it doesn't always have to be the PC version and DOSBox. Also, the downloads should include the original (but with removed copy-protect) version, so I could use this if I have my own emulator, my own setup (not only on Linux I'd prefer to use the version of DOSBox/ScummVM/FS-UAE/... installed by the package manager) or if I want to use it on original hardware. And if you use DOSBox, get the config right, please! And if you use ScummVM, get the best MIDI soundfonts for that game with it!

Fourth, (but not the least priority): PLEASE continue to secure triple-A titles! I was so happy when Horizon: Zero Dawn came out for the PC, not only on Steam, but also on GOG,com! I was disappointed that Sony went with a different strategy with the PC release of God of War... Shame...

I'm still waiting for Assassin's Creed: Valhalla from GOG.com. I refuse to buy this from UbiSoft, even I'd consider it a game worthy to play. I could go with Steam (since I have a Steam Deck), but I'd rather get it from GOG.com...

So far my wishes. Other than that: GOG.com does a great job trying to get as many great games as possible, and as much DRM free as possible. I know this sometimes works better, sometimes worse... Given the (not existing) alternatives, I will stay with GOG for the foreseeable future.

How could Galaxy know where the saves are if the developers don't tell it (implement the feature)? It's the same thing on Steam. Not all developers bother implementing cloud saves. At the same time most developers put saves all over the place, rather than in the dedicated Saved Games folder that Microsoft created specifically for that purpose all the way back in Vista.

We don't even have Assassin's Creed 2, so we're definitely not going to get Valhalla either.
However, if you really are interested, please join my effort to bring more Ubisoft games on GOG. Comment on Ubisoft's own discord as described here.
I'm just happy to see more Good Old Games on GOG, so for the 15th anniversary I want to see some new launches (sounds like Civ5 is finally coming) and some good sales.

btw 2014 is NINE years ago now, GOG. Dragon Age 2 launched in 2011. Dragon Age Inquisition in 2014. Mass Effect launched in 2007, Mass Effect 2 in 2010, Mass Effect 3 in 2012...

Just saying.

Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood and Revelations could realistically come to GOG now that Ubisoft has turned off all online services for these games.

Some people here do this by buying another copy and giving to others, be it family or friends.

If you want the devs to know you've done this, give them a bell to thank them.
Just buy several copys and hand it over to some friends or even users... there is plenty of options for support and even make other gamers happy. There is not really the need to "rip" out the bad day from a gamer by adding overpriced DLCs, although if it works...

Or just buy a gift copy and keep it if you want it to be fully "your" extra payment and not spread the joy...

I'd love nothing more, but that hardly changes anything. They still have the Ubisoft Connect integration/requirement, except that rewards and some DLCs no longer work lol. So they crippled these games, rather than sending out a patch to have that content be permanently unlocked. So if they can't be bothered to make a patch to unlock all this content, they probably can't be bothered to remove their proprietary DRM either, although I am poking them about it often.

Cavalary: Some demos may get updates, or may for some reason get removed but people may still want to redownload later. There was outcry when a demo actually was time-limited, after all, and I'd say for good reason.
avatar
joppo: I do not disagree with you. Taking demos off circulation is just plain silly and kinda defeats the very reason why there is a demo in the first place.

But you're missing my point. If Gog were to hold the notion that the demo shouldn't be taken off (unless the full game is being removed from the store), then there's no reason why it has to be attached to the account because anyone could just redownload it from the gamecard.
Except for people who don't use the browser (nor galaxy) to download, like me.

You seem to be implying GOG is the hold-up here. It's up to EA, and EA doesn't seem to care and hasn't released anything here in quite a few years.

Of course, I would love to see those come to GOG.
Thanks for the thread Alexim.

My wish is humble, as you all already said most of it.

Have no achievements!!!???
I am glad that Moonshine Inc has it xD
....

These are old games, most of it, I know. Played'em as a boi, there was no different reality, and feel like ->my childhood is disrespected by skipping achievements for those games<-. In addition, I see no reason to play by Galaxy, other than Achievements(table) and Multiplayer. Thank you for the chance to say this. ^ Dear GOG, Please provide The Achievements Team with fresh fruits and organic coffee and get things done.

Well, the fact you wouldn't does not mean you couldn't, you know. But I get what you mean. Like you I also use gogrepoc to manage my downloads, and if demos were not attached to the account they wouldn't be included in the manifest file.

Still, having skimmed gogrepoc's code I think that it wouldn't be too hard to tweak it to accommodate that change. But I think we're veering too much offtopic here. If Gog happens to modify the way it works we'll discuss it in depth in the proper thread.

The same way the guys over at PC Gaming Wiki collect that information, of course. By starting a game, saving it, and then looking for recently changed files.

You're right that devs do mess up, but in the end this is not as hard as you describe. It's just a column in their database: for game X the value is <folder X>; for game Y the saves are stored in <folder Y>...

Pre-post edit: actually I just remembered one caveat: earlier version of Windows would direct the game to save in a different folder than more recent versions. So it's a bunch of columns instead, and two more for Mac and Linux. Still no big deal.

That's not how it works, at all. Adding achievements to a game that never had it is essentially opening the source and significantly altering it. It is quite a big task, opening someone else's code, most of the time disorganized (game devs aren't known by their tidyness, to be polite), sometimes written in a programming language that you're not used to, using techniques you would never think of, to insert code that identify moments in the game where some stuff happened and shoot a call to the steam/galaxy API with the info that "Achievement number 10 was reached". Not only it is very complicated and prone to creating new bugs, it's still downright ILLEGAL if the permission isn't written in the contract! Either the devs do it or no one will, period.

The "Achievements Team" (as you called them) work by getting a game that has achievements on Steam and replicating those achievements in Galaxy, i. e. they work on the Galaxy side so that it will know what to do once the game shoots it a message that "Achievement number 10 was reached". Once they do it, the Galaxy engine knows that it should show the player a message "X", with an icon "Y", and store the achievement as completed in the DB record "Z".

I would need only one GOG-exclusive game with achievements to prove your theory wrong. And I found two.

Still. No need to advocate for the Achievements Team, I used to be a workaholic, and I said my wish. And thanks again : )

edit: some forum upgrades? : )

And you want Galaxy to make that determination? A human can investigate recently created/edited files and verify whether that is the game save, or something else entirely. Galaxy is not going to have any context and I certainly would not want Galaxy snooping around my whole PC, scanning for recently updated files, then uploading some stupid Photo to its cloud that may have synced up via OneDrive at the same time I created a save or a config file for the 1st time. That would be a massive privacy risk.
