Well, gentlemen, veterans of games. I want to hear your opinion about the following series of games:
- Europa Universalis;
- Crusader Kings;
- Civilization.

Interested in: is there any sense in playing in all games of series, or is it possible to limit oneself to certain ones, or even turn to the side of clones (hello, FreeCiv!)? What is your opinion about these series in general - pros, cons, general impressions?

P. S. I'm pretty lazy today, so excuse me for Google Translating of my original post :-).

The real problem is that you need a shitload of time to play these games. I used to play Civ (up until 3 - first on the Amiga in the 90's), Master of Magic, Master of Orion 1+2, Alpha Centauri...

But then I was single and student... Now I have a full time job and wife and kids, and these games to lend themselves to short sessions, and worse, they are hard to pick up again after a few days of not playing (gets worse the deeper you get to the end game). And furthermore, if you want to succeed on any but the easiest difficulty levels you have to learn these games - know the strengths and weaknesses of units, allies, enemies and all the little stuff that can turn defeat into victory.

So I almost stopped playing complex 4X games, as well as flight simulators because the time they need to learn and the "pick up where you left" problem make them not worthwhile for me any more. I kind of miss those games though...
I could never quite get into the free clones of CIV, even though I tried (there was c-evo as well).

In fact, the only Civ games I could get into so far were Civ 4 and 5.

I do hope I, someday, take some time off to watch a few tutorial videos of how to play Europa Universalis 3 and Crusader Kings 2 so that I may enjoy them (I'm not a huge fan of trial and error and guesswork, unfortunately)

Which really is a shame because these indepth sort of games really are the best to play and are actually in a sense good for you insofar as they require you to use various cognitve skills.

Into the Breach is wonderful if you need short gaming sessions (I am in same situation as you) but enjoy tactical depth.
If you haven't tried it yet, I encourage you to.

So true. "Ok, where was I and what the hell am I doing now?"

Talking about it in another thread made me re-install Endless Legend last night. Holy crap, I had forgotten how horrible and inscrutable the UI is in that game. Really have to fight that game to find the fun.
Just the ones on gog, or you want the ones available on steam too?

IMO I'd stick to the newer ones if you haven't played any them before. I played some of the earlier ones back in the day when they came out, and they don't really hold that well today compared to the newer versions. That's just my own view, of course. So if you have the time for them all, my own recommendation is to only buy the newest version of each of them and see what mods there are.

I always loved the 4x games, so I naturally enjoy them, but they were never my favourites in the genre.
I loved them, but as others have said, they require too much time. On the bright side, you will save money by not buying more games. Civilization IV alone is enough to last a lifetime.

How many years until pension? Now you know what you will do then! You will have lots of free time then, no small kids running around, no sex with the missus (maybe she is even dead by then!) etc.

I like RTS games, but "grand-strategy games"/4x strategy games just usually go way over my head, feeling so overwhelming right at the start.

RTS games always start from the basics and teach you into the game mission by mission, while these grand strategy games are like "there's the whole world and here is you. Now do something!". Like throwing me at the deep end of the pool, full of fricking SHARKS WITH LASERBEAMS ATTACHED TO THEIR HEADS!

Master Of Orion 3 is the best game ever made!

Wow, that's cold...
And it's still more than 20 years until pension...

You really think your going to get a pension. All those youngsters sitting in their coffee shops, wondering how they will pay for their self manipulation degree, are not eyeing your hard earned life pot?
And now Paradox just announced Imperator: Rome (Crusader Kings in the Ancient Age): https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/go-from-brick-to-marble-in-paradox%E2%80%99s-imperator-rome.1098908/

AKA the dream game I have always wanted to play. I can see all my free time being dangerously sunk into this. On the other hand... Steam-only. :(

I keep looking at it but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
