System shock 2, Deus ex 1, VtmB, Kotor 2, MGS2 from the top of my head

So SS2 and DE1 basically immersive sims essentials and to this day are best the genre has to offer, Vtmb is still the best crpg, Kotor 2 is clunky but incredibly ambitious and MGS2 is a good game that made my jaw drop because they predicted 2020s, I think I played it 4 years ago for the first time so no childhood bias here.

Vainamoinen: I don't know who praised XII. For us quadragenarians, that's like the tenth or eleventh best Final Fantasy game of the main series.

I know, I know, times change. Yesterday I stumbled on a youtube review of Eternal Strands in which some idiot twen told me that the game was really bad and boring because it told its story "like in a Super NES game".

If somebody tells me some PC game is "like a Super NES" game, the first thing I ask is whether it's on GOG and can I buy it.
avatar
.Keys: Oh wops!
Although I personally enjoyed FFXII a lot back then on my PS2 (Yazmat was a really cool and memorable fight for me.), I gotta admit I misspelled that.
I actually meant Final Fantasy VII*.
Final Fantasy 7 is actually at the very bottom of my list for FF games (of those that are on the list). I felt that the game was terrible and a disgrace to the series. Or, to put it another way, it took all the bad aspects of FF6, threw out the good aspects, and added more annoying timewasters such as FMVs and excessively long summon animations.

It would be hard for me to come up with a game I'd rank below FF7 that isn't outright kuso.

Other popular RPGs I dislike include Ultima 7 and Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. (Haven't tried BG3, but given what I know about it, it wouldn't be in the same category.)

Except for *one* mandatory button mashing part that ruins the entire game for me.

* Tyrian 2000 (Free on GOG)
* Ultima 1
* Ultima 2
* Ultima 3
* Ultima 4
Why don't you have "(Free on GOG)" listed for Arena, Daggerfall, and Ultima 4? Those games are just as free as Tyrian 2000 on GOG.

I probably forgot to add it, but the OP asked what games are must-plays, so I just listed all the ones that immediately came to mind.
Who remember Jazz & Spaz ?
Oh yep.. this is a game I like

My top 5 game list:

1. Skyrim or Morrowind (leaning more towards Morrowind)
2. Saints Row 2, ignoring the really bad pc port this game is an absolute masterpiece! And i'm glad that i was able to experience it in a relatively bug free state.
3. Age of Wonders: Planetfall, a combination of Civilization + XCOM + Fallout + Star Wars + Warhammer 40K! Far better than any Sid Meier's Civilization. Besides, the character creator allowed me to make a Jedi Julius Caesar and King Leonidas of Sparta in power armor! among others... Highly underrated game IMO.
4. Divinity: OS 2, when i first played it, i said that this is the best RPG i played since Skyrim.
5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Honorable mentions (not necessarily DRM-free):

Command & Conquer, a must play for RTS fans (apart from C&C 4, C&C 4 should be avoided at all costs!!!)

Assassin's Creed Rogue, basically Black Flag (the best pirate game ever made!) in north Atlantic + a really good whaling simulator.

Far Cry 3, if you are even slightly interested into FPSs this is a must play! It has one of the best written villain in a video game. Great protagonist character development, going from a kidnapped tourist to a badass mercenary.
This game is like Rambo meets Indiana Jones meets Tomb Raider! It features a great hunting simulator, a quest for relics in form of collectables, your typical FPS mayhem and a game of Poker!

Sid Meier's Civilization V, i would recommend AoW over Civilization any day, but if you really want to play or try a Sid Meier's Civilization... V is the way to go.

I don't have time for all of those... could you trim it down by 90%?
Need for Speed - Underground ~because it is basically just racing, and you can tune/pimp your cars
A more modern recommendation might be ~ Need for Speed - Payback

Railroad Tycoon 2 ~Charming as hell and quite addictive

My Warhammer pick would be

Warhammer 40.000 - Rogue Trader ~ A good way to experience the world of Warhammer

Banished ~nice colony manager with actual population growth OMG

Wargame :

Panzer Corps Why?, well because this game is my general recommendation
My top 10 that I'd REALLY like to have again...

Panzer General (DOS).
Star Trek - The Next Generation - A Final Unity.
The X-Files Game.
GTA 3: Vice City.
Star Trek: Borg.
Star Trek: Klingon Honor Guard.
Star Trek: Klingon.
Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit.
WIlliam Shatner's TekWar.
G-Police.

If I could just have those games, my life would feel complete.
It feels like the correct answer to this thread is the minimal set of games that if you had, you could extract+combine the features of some of those games to make the best games available today.

But that seems far too much like market research to me so obviously I'm reading too much into a simple what games do you like topic :)

Plasticine879: Star Trek: Borg.
Well, I can't give you an opportunity to own it, but you can play a remaster here.

Huh, what is this? I doubt that it's legal. People who claim that "abandonware" is a grey area to justify themselves, no it's not. Just like people who post full moves on youtube and say "no copyright infringment is intended", of course it's intended and you know what you're doing.

I perfer to stay legal. And I'd rather GOG did a proper release, and I'd buy those games from them in a millisecond. Thanks, and I'm poking around the site, but I question if it's legal.

It's not official, obviously, but it's been up for well over a year with no action taken against it either.

Look, you must do whatever you are comofortable with but I have absolutely no qualms about playing a game that is simply not possible to buy, so I'm sharing it whenever people mention the game. It's either fans doing work like this (keep in mind this is also a remaster looking way better than the original) or games being simply lost to time forever, and I find that much more objectionable than the grey area of abandonware.
*omitting what has already been mentioned*

Disco Elysium
Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven
Planescape Torment
Shadowrun...
Mount & Blade...
Kingdom Come...
Flatout
Heroes of Might and Magic 3

Thief: The Black Parade mod
Gothic 2: Archolos mod
