So what's the story as to why all these games were removed. I know about Alan Wake and the music licensing thing but what about the others? Generally...

It's all a bit sad isn't it?
Managed to squirrel a few of them away, missed out on Colin McRae and TOCA Race Driver 3.
Hoped the Arma series would return, as i hoped to see Arma three, glad i picked up the others before they were pulled.

nightcraw1er.488: Alan wake
Armello (good fecking riddance)
Original working good properly priced baldurs gate/ice wind dale/planescape torment
Wait, Armello was removed entirely? I think I missed that -- was there an announcement? I thought they just replaced it with that crippled "DRM-free special edition".

A shame about some of the other games which were removed over the years. Some of them are really good, and it's frustrating to think that most of them were removed due to expired contracts/ licensing issues.

I wish GOG would at least give people a warning ( via a front-page post ) and a final chance to buy such games whenever possible. Usually we only get a forum thread, and I imagine most people miss those.
On my shelf, I have tagged as "removed from catalog":

Alan Wake
Arma (three games)
Balls of Steel
Blade of Darkness
Chronicles of Riddick
Descent (three games)
Duke Nukem (four games)
Racecar Driver: Grid
Spellforce 2 (two expansions)
UFO Afterlight

I'm also sitting on a small pile of codes for some of the above to be hoarded and eventually traded for great piles of gold someday.

Leroux: I guess I could still try to get a second hand copy for the PS2, but I don't know if it would be just as much fun to play on that console, on my old CRT TV with the PS gamepad.

adaliabooks: I've only played the Gamecube version, so I have no idea what the others are like, but it does work on consoles. Free Radical were masters of making console FPSs (considering they were formed from Rare employees who worked on Goldeneye)
Now I'm even more frustrated that we can no longer buy that game here. I actually have it for PS2 somewhere, but never finished it, and would much rather play on PC.

Edit: I just looked them up and it all makes sense now. Apparently they're also responsible for the Time Splitters series, which explains why it always reminded me of GoldenEye 007 ( and Perfect Dark ) on the N64.

jamyskis: You could pick up the PC version on disc. Amazon has it for a couple of euros plus shipping.
Sure, but does the retail version run well on modern PCs, and is it free of Starforce or whatever DRM they used to put on discs at that time? At least with the PS2 version I wouldn't have to worry about all that.

Yup, they were an awesome studio. Then they got absorbed by Crytek and went completely down the pan (though to be honest I think they had started to fail before they were bought, I believe their last game as Free Radical was a bit of a flop).

Timesplitters 2 & 3 are two of my favourite FPSs (and games) of all time.

Technically, I could add the following to the list:

Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics (Interplay versions): These games each actually have two entries in the catalog: one published by Interplay and one published by Bethesda. The Interplay versions can't be bought, but the Bethesda versions can be. The actual game is the same, but the Interplay version has more extras, while the Bethesda versions count as Bethesda games for purposes of unlocking Arena and Daggerfall.

Arena and Daggerfall: These games were never technically buyable from the site (and hence were never removed from sale), but are in essentially the same state as games that have been removed from the site. However, there is a way to get these two games on GOG: Just buy any Bethesda game (this includes the Bethesda versions of the Fallout games I mentioned above), and these two games will be added to your account. (In a way, this is like the classic editions of the Infinity Engine games; you can't buy them directly, but there's still a way to get those games added to your account.)

I'll have a look tomorrow.

StarForce according to Pc Gaming Wiki

I should have got the ARMA 2 game, IF ANYONE HAS A COPY/CODE THEY ARE WILLING TO TRADE FOR ANYTHING IN THE STORE AT REASONABLE PRICE, " PLEASE PM ME! "

I was so pissed when this game got removed from the shop a day before I got my paycheck...

The old Rare was full of geniuses, judging by the quality of their output during the SNES and N64 days. I hope most of them ( including the guys from Free Radical ) found their way into new dev teams.

Yooka-Laylee is a good game, imho, despite all the drama. Would be great if some former Rare employees could kickstart a worthy successor to their old shooters. ( Or heck, a modern Blast Corps. could be amazing, as well. )

Pangaea666: The most obvious are Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment. Some of GOG's biggest sellers. Very glad I bought them before they were so heartlessly forced to be removed.
They are not completely unobtainable though since you get them if you buy the Enhanced Edition, though you pay double the price.

Breja: The Wallace & Gromit adventure game. Which I fortunately did buy before it vanished, as it's really great.

jamyskis: but the only one I'm actually missing in any shape or form is Chessmaster 9000
That made me sad a bit :(
