I work for a webhosting company that caters to soccer moms. Security is a frequent issue with many of them.

The issue is if they're not bothering to keep up on their SSL certificate, what else are they ignoring on their back end. Like backups.

It's a sign that the website and how it operates may not be well thought out.

I decided in 2018 to focus less on what my backlog is, and more on what I have completed. I completed a further 31 games during the year, with the following being the most notable (most enjoyable ones bolded):

Auditorium; Kathy Rain; The Flame in the Flood; Grandpa's Table; Tumblestones; Sword of the Stars: The Pit; Broken Sword 1: Director's Cut; Heroes Chronicles 5: The World Tree; and Monaco: What's Yours is Mine.

My current stats are therefore (annual changes in brackets:
Owned 1690 (+55), Finished 264 (+31), In Progress 60(=) Backlog 1366 (+24).

In 2019 I managed to complete a further 19 games, with the most notable being:

Into the Breach, Legend of Grimrock 1, Minit, Starcrawlers and Sunless Seas.

My current stats are therefore (Annual changes in Brackets):
Owned 1743 (+53), Finished 283 (+19), In progress 71 (+11), Backlog 1389 (+23)

My backlog used to mostly be games from genres I'm not actually interested in, and probably shouldn't have bought. I keep taking long stretches of time off from gaming lately though, and am down to 1-2 hours max game time a day, so my backlog is getting much more filled with games I actually WANT to play. It's a bummer.

Having bought, from the start of December 2020 until now, when I really am just about finished (my paper wishlist is left with only 7 games that I'll need to find in a second hand store somewhere - and I'm not going to chase it in particular), a 186 games, my backlog looks a lot worse than ever before. The majority of those were games that I had wishlisted for years and had never bought because I was never before willing to buy from Steam. With the differences in their prices compared to gog in the current financial climate, though, I caved and went completely "mad".

I had, however, also managed to complete a further 33 games this year, although some were demos ( I include those in my total owned), a few of which enticed me into buying the full versions during this recent spree (Willy Morgan, Spiritfarer, Bleeding Moons, Beautiful Desolation, Carto), and thus my current stats are:

Owned 2000 (+257), Finished 309 (+26), In Progress 76 (+16), Backlog 1583 (+194)

My notable completions this year were Tomb Raider 2, Battle Chef Brigade Deluxe, Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishment and Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise. Of the new games I just bought, I already made some decent progress on Murder by Numbers and Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. Plus the fact that I started playing Genshin Impact in November also detracts from my time for playing my bought games.

ed: Oh, 16 of my games are broken, and a further 16 unwanted, which I have deducted from my backlog total as well.

I just had a look back at the first post's "games in progress" list, and noticed that, in the last 2 years, I have at least completed Appointment with F.E.A.R. and Starcrawlers, and made good progress on Anno 1602, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Fallout 3, Ironcast, Powerslide and Oblivion.

So, the end of another year by God's grace and what has changed? Due to some nonsense happening on my hard drive, I lost 8 games in progress (mostly casual games fom BigFish - and not the games, just the progress), and I also decided to delete all the demos/prologues I have - even if the demos themselves are fun enough to replay, if they don't convince me to purchase the full game, I shouldn't retain it as it just skews my games owned stats. I therefore removed 25 titles from my games owned list.

After last year's madness, I really restricted my acquisitions this year. I only picked up 13 new games on gog, of which 8 were freebies, 6 on Humble Bundle, and a further 22 on Steam - 18 during the current winter sale.

I completed 70 games this year, including 38 demos, and 2 games I have no interest in playing any further. This also includes 17 games (demos excluded) I bought during the madness and the rest of this year. This leaves my current stats at : Owned 2017(+17), Finished 335(+26), In progress 76(=), Backlog 1574(-9). Actual progress on my backlog!!!

My notable completions for this year were Murder by Numbers, Slay the Spire, Bookworm Adventures Deluxe, Max Payne 1 and 2, Star Traders Frontiers, Youda Survivor 1 (gold on all stages), Gorogoa, Pictopix, Stardew Valley and Ticket to Earth.

With only about 700 games in my library, and about 75 games left that i think i should need to finish, i already restricted my future purchases with an allowance of 30 euro's a month. Of course with grand strat as main course it is not hard to abide by a dynamic law set at all. (major/interesting replayability for almost any purchase in that plane though these days it seems to settle around 100 - 150 hours played)

I'm pretty good at playing one game at a time, which really helps achieve the goal of finishing things. I might rush the ending or skip the expansions though, if I'm really ready to play something else.

I'm also good at playing games in the genre I really care about, which is RPGs. It's everything else... shooters, adventure games, etc... that I fall way behind on.

I play a game when I am in the mood to play it, and only for as long as I feel like playing it ... though if I didn't complete it, I may come back again later and either continue on or restart.

I don't have any hard or fast rules about reducing my backlog. In fact, I don't really care to ensure it gets reduced. What I care about is variety and having something at hand when I am in the mood for it.

That said, there are certainly some games that have a much higher priority, and that I am keen to play more than others. Still it is mood that guides me. I certainly don't want to start a potentially great game when not in the mood for it.

And mood is often relative to free time and what else is going on in my life or mind. I don't like distractions, especially if they aren't good ones, and disturb my peace of mind. Though once again, that may depend on the game, as some games can indeed help you escape reality for a while, distracting you from an issue in real life, that maybe you don't have any control over.

Sometimes when you play a game, it can be like being in a mental health session ... or taking medication ... but without any side effect ... other than addiction to gaming. Getting lost in the intricacies of coding has always been a similar good escape or break for me from the worries of the world or existence ... at least for a while.

When things get overwhelming, then breaking that cycle of thought is sometimes all you need, to gain back some peace of mind and a measure of feeling in control.

1005 games here. I'd say i download most of them. Installed maybe half. And actually spent more than an hour on say less than a dozen. Finished 0 :D

It's when you resuscitate a thread (whether you have a good reason for doing it or not) after a long period of inactivity.

Thank you for explaining. I post an annual update to this post, mostly for my own edification, but doing it more often would be too mindbogglingly boring to read for anyone - even me.
