I've heard darker bread is overall better for health but it has more calories. :P

Ouch.
I actually though that whole wheat would be less absorbed by the organism.
I suppose this is why some people earn a living by telling us what to eat: to solve such issues.
(But I believe they don't have all the answers.)

From what I've read, whole grains are absorbed more slowly by the body than highly processed foods like white flour breads. So you don't get hungry as fast (you feel satisfied for longer) and you have a slower, steadier release of energy to the body, which is used up over that time period. Highly refined and processed breads, on the other hand, are absorbed much faster by the body and any excess energy is stored as fat. So while whole grains may have 'more' calories, they're still a better choice.

That's a given, slow release of energy vs. quick, the quick ones also causing blood sugar spikes and dips making you even hungrier when it dips, and there's also the matter of slow release carbs being quite useful when exercising for longer and not at peak intensity. Certainly. The darker bread can be from whole grain (including wheat) or other grains (like rye). Or simply forgotten in the toaster.

Fun story:
In my region there is a traditional cake that we eat between Christmas and the first weeks of new year. In a supermarket they have a bakery where they sell bread, cakes and also this particular cake in the relevant period.

I once entered it and saw an entire shelve of "toasted cake". What!? And it seemed quite cheap, too. I had never seen toasted cake before or since that day, so I'm fairly convinced that it was an effort to recover from an "oops" event.
