I've been trying to get this game to work on my PC. Installed it fine, but I can only run it in windowed mode. If I start in Fullscreen, the game instantly crashes and I get this message:

Assertion failed: RenDev [File:WinViewport.cpp] [Line: 787]

History: UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine

Can anyone help? Alt + Enter doesn't work, and there's no option to set to fullscreen in game either. It doesn't help that I only found one fix for this, and that didn't work. So if anyone could help in any way, I would appreciate it.

The issue is not that the game doesn't work, I just can't start it in fullscreen, only in windowed (which only lets me play in 4:3)
If I try to start the the game in fullscreen (by changing the ini file) then I get then the game crashes and I get the message I said above. What I heard is that the game tries to start the game in such a low resolution, that modern PCs can't handle, so the game crashes (but it crashes even if the resolution is set to 1920x1080)

Hello Tabus1. You could try the following fix:

Thanks, but that is actually the only fix I found for this game and it doesn't work unfortunately. I get the same error after doing that.

A commenter from this youtube video said that he experienced the same exact error as you did and he was able to fix it by running the game as an Administrator and putting compatibility mode to XP Service Pack 2 or 3.
Alternatively, you could try installing the latest official patch (1.3) or if you have already done so and it still doesn't work, you could try your luck with the unofficial ones.

I would uninstall and try follow the installation directions below. This is how I got XIII to work on Win7 64bit and haven't had any issues.

I used the same guide to get widescreen working, and I installed the gog release. Doesn't work on Win7 64 bit for me. On the other hand, the same install works in fullscreen on my 32 bit laptop. So I guess I'll just play on that. Thanks for the answers though.
Open XIII.ini, locate this sentence:

StartupFullscreen=True
and change it to
StartupFullscreen=False

You can try editing a custom resolution on:

WindowedViewportX=
WindowedViewportY=

I know, I did that and it works in windowed. My issue was that I couldn't play in fullscreen. But fullscreen works on my laptop, so it's not an issue anymore. And if you set the windowed resolution to something like 1920x1080, it will just be set back to the highest possible resolution, which is 1280x960 :D
Thanks for helping though.

that game is so good
I wonder where somebody registered in October 2015 got a GOG version of XIII.

bela555: that game is so good
It is, especially the soundtrack :D I didn't remember that the ost was this good

Anyways, even though I couldn't get it working on my pc, it works on my laptop, so I don't need any more help. To those who answered though, I thank you.

Does it matter? It's pretty much impossible to get this game anymore. And I actually bought the game like 10 years ago but the disc doesn't work anymore. I just wanted to replay it because I knew it was a good game :)
