Of course they are, we can't risk people making unauthorized copies and sharing them with their friends, can we? Duh.

...seriously now, which one is copy protected? I don't see Starforce being mentioned in any download page.

edit: found it, it's the Reunion demo. That's just so Egosoft...

I was looking at X3:Reunion downloads page as X3:Terran War Pack is absolutely no chance on kohlrak's computer.

drmike: Um, retiring? News to me. Got a reference?

Darvond: Well, maybe not "retiring", but starting to be phased out? After all, that's why Wayland exists. :B
As much as i hate the concept of X, i do like that it can be redirected. It's bloated, hard to use, etc, but I fear that any replacement would be even more bloated. I understand the reasons: X is ancient, the code is likely to be an absolute mess, but at what cost are we replacing it?

Good guess, i averaged about 19fps on reunion (minimum settngs). Unlike previous predictions, the asteroid sections had a maximum impact of 3fps when they did. I'm trying to find the log the program output. It's not in the install directory (why are we installing demos mean to be used once or twice, especially when they're about half a gigabyte?). The combat demo was the harshest demo, showing that the bottle neck is the CPU: collision detection.

I'm going to run the x2 demo here in a minute (after i give up on looking for the reunion log).

EDIT: With everything turned up:

I noticed the particle engines were the biggest eater of frames. So i'll try turning everything down and seeing if i'm not better off trying to run reunion.

EDIT2: Antialiasing, bump mapping, and shadows disabled, the FPS did really well. Most likely the antialiasing (who cares about shadows?) so i'd turn the bump mapping back on, but those particle effects from the engines make me desperate to squeeze every frame out of the engine that i can, since i'm still hitting 12FPs on those.

Gylfe: I know there are a lot of other space junkies on here with me that absolutely loved X3. It really is a hidden gem that isn't that well known. If you are any sort of space flight fan, with or without a joystick, then you need to check out the X series.

Anyway, on to the point of this post. I was shocked to see that X4 isn't on the wishlist yet! We MUST get this on GoG! It really looks fantastic and it's one of the very few space games that aren't dedicated or heavily multiplayer. Please check out the link in the wishlist narrative and spend a few minutes to check it out, it's very promising and a lot of the features are already on in-game preview videos. If you like what you see, please vote in the community wishlist page!
It was already on the list here:

Either way, more attention is always good. :) Hope we don't have to wait for too long once it comes out.
I love when games like this have a tutorial mode, even if it's not intuitive. It makes sens to read manuals as you play. But, i did notice that my keyboard shortcuts only work with numlock turned on, and only the numlock controls. I'm not sure what's going on here, and i'm not sure how to reconfigure the controls (though i'm sure there's a way). So, in the second tutorial, i try to fire a missile, and apparently the L key is the preferred method, and no dice. I'm going to wait a little bit here (while skimming the manual) then open a new topic under X, incase someone knows something i don't.

pmcollectorboy: Well if I never get to experience Star Citizen, this might an acceptable alternative.
As long as X4 releases in this lifetime, sure. :) I'd give X4 a whirl. Though I don't do as well in X3 than I did at X2.

BTW - Just imagine the Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, and Battlestar Galactica mod page for X4 when they start to develop them!!

De4thstroke: Never played any of the X games. If I wanted to start, which game would you reccommend?
Definitely go with X3!

I have Rebirth, but never played it tbh. I read too many bad reviews and it's so much different then the other games. I may play it eventually, but it really is something different.

In the X series, you do really anything you want. You can be a mercenary, a pirate, a trader, a military pilot... You are thrown into the universe (which is ridiculously large) in a starter ship and it's up to you how to go forward. You can join whichever faction you want, or make yourself an enemy of all of them.

There are so many mods for this game that you can really turn it into any series you want. I had an entire fleet and multiple space stations in a system I took over. I made my Star Wars fleet with Mon Calamari Cruisers and Star Destroyers, all of which I could pilot. I then had the docking bays full of fighters for each ship, X-Wings, Y-Wings, and A-Wings in the Calamri Cruiser, and different variations of TIEs in the Star Destroyers. THERE IS EVEN A SUPER STAR DESTROYER!!!

There is even a mod to have a galactic war going on. It is the most living open universe I've experienced in a game with active faction relations, trade, and battles happening.

Star Trek, Stargate, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly... there are mods for any sci fi franchise you can think of. You can mix them, or just make a universe of your favorite franchise. Play how you want, whether you just want to be the ultimate trader and have your automated trade ships making you rich running around the galaxy, or be a warlord and conquer.

Aside from all the various ships I added from various franchises, my two favorite mods were a Star Wars mod and a Battlestar Galactica mod. These each either have a story, or integrate the series into the game's story.

Battlestar mod: http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=233733

I'm not sure that's exactly the BSG mod I was using that has an actual BSG story, but you can find it on the Egosoft forums. Check Moddb and the Egosoft forums for an idea of what this game is like.

This is a video of one of the latest builds of the Star Wars mod in use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RIvIGHng0o

I'm pretty sure this is a video of the BSG mod I used with the BSG story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbZ5Xisu_cc

From what I read about X4, it will contain all of the features of X3 and add features like being able to get out of your ship and walk around space stations.

If you are a sci fi or space fan at all, you need to check out X3 and vote for getting X4 on GoG!!

Thanks for the reply. You probably need a joystick to enjoy this game though.
You don't need a joystick, it has the same mouse controls from Freelancer, Galaxy on Fire, and the space portions of Battlefront 2 (2017). So you only need a joystick to enjoy it if you personally feel the need for a joystick. I used a joystick when I first got X3, but I learned about the controls like Freelancer and never went back to it.

I loved Tie Fighter in the 90s, which did require a joystick. I loved Xwing V Tie Fighter and subsequent games since then like Freespace 2 and it's plentiful mods, but I still prefer the mouse controls. I guess the joystick adds immersion so you can feel like you're in a space ship, but I just control it so much better with the mouse.

If you feel like you need it to enjoy it, you certainly may use one, but if you're like me and prefer the mouse it has the best mouse control system for space games.

No, I own a joystick but do not use it for the X3 games. It works fine with mouse and keyboard.
I'm currently playing X2...

Yeah well, it's a management game most of the time... But when you actually get in the cockpit of a fighter, it's more fun with HOTAS :-)
