foxgog: Yes, old story... when "Gothic II" initially released in Germany in 2003 seemingly everyone in the small vocal Gothic community and the gaming magazines were abusing the ^console command for godmode or other cheats which were exactly the same as in the original "Gothic" game, and then complaining the game was too easy for veteran Gothic players. (I even remember that the game mocked the player for enabling the "maverick" mode.)
Wait, so people were enabling God mode and then complaining that the game was easy? *baffled*

foxgog: Unfortunately, GOG.COM stopped providing the link to the original installer (without the addon), because they could not make it run for non-German language versions - especially the English one.
That's weird. What makes changing the language break the game so thoroughly? Shouldn't that just replace the text and speech files that are loaded?

Okay, I don't normally like exploits, at all, and save scumming is an exploit, but they made this game so much harder I've given myself permission to use one exploit (save scumming regarding praying at Shrine of Innos).

So, I figure I want to save my 100 gold donations for strength and dexterity till at least I get them over 30 (thus saving more LP's) but I thought okay, I'll try and get the 20 mana. According to what I've read, guildless you can get +1STR 10 times, +1DEX 10 times, and +1Mana 20 times.

I have saved and reloaded a hundred fricken times. Strength and dexterity. Every. Time. Not one mana in over a hundred times (not all at once, I started this on day 6, did 25 tries each day, then gave up, I'm on day 11 now, so that's...125 attempts if my math is correct. Not. One. Mana. Ever.

I'm beginning to think NoTR changed that as well. Anyone know? Also, too, did NoTR do away with the increases from eating apples and dark mushrooms? I haven't eaten any apples (strength) because I wanted to wait until my strength got to a point where I was saving at least 1 LP per STR, preferably 2. But I think I've eaten over 50 mushrooms by now. In fact, I think I've eaten significantly more than 50 as this whole game I eat dark mushrooms for health every time I've needed to (and that's a lot). No mana bonus. IIRC, in the original Gothic 2 you got +1 strength for every 25 apples and +1 Mana for every 50 dark mushrooms.

I suppose it's possible I haven't yet eaten 50, but it sure feels like I have (if I start over yet again I'm gonna keep count on a piece of paper next time). But with over 100 attempts at the Shrine of Innos to get Mana... that must've been changed right? I mean the odds of zero for 125 have to be.... astronomical if mana has the same chance as strength and dexterity. Not one. Not a solitary, single, one. Fucking NADA.

OldFatGuy:
I *think* you need to be a mage to get mana at shrines. But not sure.

Edit: Checked a list, not quite. Seems like as a novice you ONLY get mana, while as a mercenary you NEVER get mana.
And str from apples and mana from mushrooms seems to still work.

Reminded that a number of Japanese games, games were made intentionally harder for the west as gamers had higher reflex rates.

Though the easiest (and laziest) way to increase difficulty is to increase hitpoints, making monsters bullet sponges.

Some games i played like some Tower Defense games, where you had a max level you could raise towers, the enemies can infinitely grow in difficulty, ending up with making it impossible to defeat monsters in the allotted time normally.

And then in WoW, i watched a 'why there's no new players' or something, him playing solo and how he was leveling quickly early on, but later he felt weaker and weaker and weaker getting closer to level 50 just from how long it took to activate abilities and how many activations to defeat enemies.

Having difficulty overcome by skill is one thing, but challenges hindered from completing based on some arbitrary level/gate is an annoyance.

I'm still guildless, so all should be available. After you become militia or mercenary, mana isn't available. After you become a mage, strength and dexterity aren't available. But guildless, they're all supposed to be available.

Found this FAQ on how shrines work:

vsr: The Hero can pray to Innos 1 time per day. During a prayer you should to spend 100 gold coins, otherwise the bonus won't be. Thus the Hero receives randomly +1 to strength/dexterity/mana.
The quantity of bonuses doesn't depend from chapter, but only from guild to which our Hero belongs:
Neutral/Militia/Paladin: 10 times to strength, 10 times to dexterity, 20 times to mana, then +3 to life indefinitely;
Novice/Fire magician: 20 times to mana, then +3 to life indefinitely;
Mercenary/Dragon hunter: 10 times to strength and 10 times to dexterity, then +3 to life indefinitely.
If not to spend money at all, then with probability of 5% Hero will receive +1 to life;
If to spend 10 coins, then receive +1 to life;
If to spend 50 coins, then receive +2 to life.
Source.
I've tested it as a guildless and it's true - you get randomly strength OR dexterity (10 each overall), only then you start getting +1 mana (20 mana overall), then +3hp (unlimited).
Exactly in this order: strength and dexterity, then mana, then hp.
