Dray2k: A question though, do the HDD tools for WD also suffer from bloat? I heard that WD do make the best HDDs right now.
avatar
Dray2k: Yeah that makes sense, thank you for clarifyng.
You're welcome! :)

I installed today the SanDisk SSD Dashboard (210 MB installer), which is similar to the Western Digital SSD Dashboard, because I couldn't find the WD one as an offline installer. Only a small 352 KB online installer, which I don't like.

I ended up with the application's folder (422 MB and 464 files) and three MSVC 2015 redistributables (see the attached pic). The SSD Dashboard failed to start properly due to some OpenGL .dlls missing on my virtual machine.

I hope that helps you, if you're interested in buying some WD/SanDisk SSDs. The WD Blue 3D and SanDisk Ultra 3D are good drives (probably the same internally), but personally, I'll stick with the Samsung Evo (has 600 TBW endurance vs. 400 TBW WD/SanDisk, for the 1 TB variants), which is around the same price here. Just avoid the WD Green and SanDisk SSD Plus.

Ouch. Compare that with the less than 35 Mb installed Samsung utility, using 700k RAM while running in background...

Yup, that's why I'm avoiding those. Do you keep Samsung Magician running all the time?

Little reason not to. Don't see the need either, but meh. And actually have to restart it for that, because it turns itself off after a while (1-2-3 days? never remember, but with my computer only rebooted when absolutely necessary...). The turn off thing only happens once, if I restart it manually it stays running.
You don't need the software though. And even then if do you have it, you don't need it running constantly. The only real benefit from the software is keeping an eye on the SSD lifetime.

And a low price NVMe is great for the OS installation.

dtgreene: One interesting option is to extract the root directory into a zram bock device; this gets you in-memory compression (using lzo or lz4, so fast compression here) while still avoiding disk accesses. (Or, similarly, just store the image on the boot medium and clone it into the zram block device.)

(These options don't give you the ability to copy to RAM after booting; you still need to use something like dm-mirror or btrfs to do that sort of thing.)
I wouldn't recommend that. I mean if you could copy a block already compressed and then have it usable that's one way. But the extra time in compressing the data as well as it being less optimal vs if you optimized compression (with the same decompression speed/requirements).

Depends on if it needs to be read-only or not though.
Just an update on new pc for those that are interested. Also WIN10 PRO is provided free, instead of Home. This was suggested by builder, instead of higher priced pieces.Maybe, some of you will say that ''this is no good'' but the deal is done and paid so there is no going back:)

Strictly speaking, it does matter where things are stored on an SSD, just not in the same way as in an HDD. SSDs consist of many blocks of storage, each of a certain size, and while there aren't any issues with reading them, there is one consideration with writing one. In order to write to an area of an SSD, the entire block has to be erased first, which will then require the entire block (or at least the portion that's referenced by the file system) to be re-written. For example, if a file is fragmented, with bits and pieces of it on different blocks, re-writing the file will require erasing every single block of the file, which in turn requires writing all that date elsewhere.
Just to add to dtgreenes excellent answer (unless it's already been addressed):

This is why you should never fill out the entire SSD. Leave out 15%-25% free space at all times or it will drastically reduce its performance.

Little late to the conversation but Is that WD you got on your new build an SSD or did you end up getting an HDD on both ends. I use an SSD for my startup drive and for those games that benefit from it and for storage I use a 2tb Firecuda Hybrid.

No,I got scared of the SSD and stuck with HHD and I know that's silly but I preferred to stay with HHD as I know how to keep it managed.
I split the drive to 2TB in "C" and "D" drive.

Congrats on your new rig. Now you should sell your old one on Gumtree or something similar to make some extra money to offset the cost of the new system.

Nothing wrong with that. I was just curious. You could always add one in case you change your mind later on but obviously it just comes down to what you like. I still think SSDs have a couple of kinks to work out.

Well, going by this thread they have somethings to improve. And who knows maybe in the future I will but not at the moment.

Sweet. Your new rig will at least help you play new games so that's always a plus.
