North Indians tend to look down on South Indians and have a mindset that they are more superior and civilized compared to us. (Both of which are false) Plus one other habit that they've got is to mock South Indians for not having the perfect accent while talking Hindi. When they complain about how people were racist to them when they were traveling abroad, my belief in karma is reinforced. (Funny thing is if someone ever mocks their English accent, either American or English people they'd be quick to call that person racist)

On the other hand people from a particular state in south, Tamil Nadu tend to be excessively proud of their culture, to extent that they won't even reply to your queries if you are ever lost over there in any other language than Tamil. (I was unfortunate enough for that to happen to me, luckily found someone from some other state who could speak Hindi)
Worst traits of Russian people are:
1. constant cursing (using words like "f@$k" and "mother" altogether)

2. constant smoking cigarettes like it's some kind of super tradition: everybody smokes (even Muslims) > I hate it so much!!!

3. Many Russians love to get money for doing NOTHING, they can go so far as to believe that a total stranger can be a benefactor for just no reason > they love to give their money to scammers in hope of tenfold return > so I can call it simply "Stupidity + Greed"

4. We like to speak of something like we really know something about subject, we always argue on different aspects of life with zero real experience

5. For some reason we thought of ourselves as a Nation of Saviours wrongly accused by evil and greedy Europe Union and USA. We love to discuss politics but we seldom can look out of the box, we can't think that different countries may have opposite interests.

6. We are easily persuaded by our government TV set of programs. Ask anyone and he/she will admit that Mr.Putin is a hero. Not many care about dire economic situation. (we have at 1.5 years at most before another crisis).

7. Our women loves money. Our men loves sluts. Do the math. We severely degraded spiritually, we want only pleasure and wealth.

Crosmando: Every Finnish person I've spoken to on the interwebs was quite anti-Russian and would bring up the Winter War at least once. That said maybe I travel in the wrong circles.
I don't know with how many you have discussed and about what, but could well be. Similarly like a Russian might present their anti-American sentiments, or Palestinians might present their anti-Israel sentiments.

There are lots of anti-sentiments out there. Maybe not in Australia as you live in an island far from everywhere.

Shadowstalker16: Also the some politicians here are very very dumb. I've sometimes thought if they're just acting or not, but their views are outdated as hell, and their logic scares me and people still like them somehow.
avatar
immi101: that's seems to be the same everywhere :)
In my experience politicians are not dumb, but very bad actors who though of their electorate as dumb. They can say any kind of stupid shit, but they'll never say truth.

paladin181: Worst trait: That we ripped land and life away from people who lived here before us while calling the land uninhabited and claiming it for ourselves.

Also, obesity. It's a spreading epidemic brought on by sedentary lifestyle and bad eating habits.

Hypocrisy: I weigh over 300 pounds and am disgusted by fat people. I also hate other hypocrites.

dishonesty: People will lie or cheat all the time. If you hit someone with your car and no one sees it, you need to help that person instead of racing off and letting them die. The "As long as my life isn't affected" mentality is grossly disgusting.

Generating Racial Tension: I don't like a man for his actions and behaviors. He happens to be of a different race than my own. That doesn't make me racist. But people here will make a racist issue out of nearly anything in a heartbeat. The media always throws the race of a criminal and/or victim into a story as though it's relevant to the story in any way.

NOTE: Not all traits are limited to United States-ians. But I don't live around others to observe them like that.
Holy s*it! Too much honesty in there, man. You're damn brave for stating this. I salute you!

I remember working at bank when some Indian manager from outsources support called me. He spoke English so bad and fast that I hardly could understand a word. I told him that English is not my native and asked him to speak a bit slower and then a miracle happened. He starts speaking English like an Englishman broadcaster from BBC channel with perfect Oxford accent. How that was even possible? ;)

timppu: Finnish (partly stereotypes I think, but sometimes there's some truth to stereotypes too):
...
2. Shyness. Yes many Finns will appear shy and silent to Westerners (maybe not as much to many Asians which to me appear somewhat reserved as well), unless they are intoxicated. This is partly a good trait as well, why should someone keep talking if they don't really have anything to say.
...
4. Applies mostly to modern Finns: thinking that we are somehow entitled to our current/former level of living standard, even if we don't work for it (anymore). Some people shut their eyes thinking that we don't have to fight and work to keep our living standard in the globalized world. That even though it is nowadays the Chinese and Indians who do all the work, we should somehow be able to keep our living standards. I'd actually say this is more of an European trait than just a Finnish trait, maybe?
Yes, #2 is the one that stands out the most perhaps to a foreigner, at least in the minds of other people Finns have an image of being cold and impersonal. In F1 circles for example Räikkönen has become quite famous for his iciness.
However someone like Latvala, the rally driver, is quite the opposite.

#4 is true for Sweden as well, perhaps most of Europe. Some countries have more foresight I think, like Hungary.
Like the recent immigration crisis shows, Europeans are quite bad at predicting things and are too slow to react.
I think this is very much related to the sense of apathy that permeates much of Europe.

What about Goans? What do you think of Goa/goans? Is is like a Shan-gri-la inside India or something... right? Heard this from a zookeeper from Kolkata once :P
I don't know if it really qualifies as a trait. I think it's more of a universal problem. Still, there is a worryingly large degree of tolerance, and even fandom, for incredibly mediocre and outright crap local musicians. I know taste in music is subjective, but damn, I could pull better songs out of an elephant's ass :P

babark: Can be a bit of a sensitive topic, no? I mean, most people have no issue pointing out fault with their own countries, but when someone else does it, it's found to be somewhat impolite and offensive :D.

Regardless, Pakistanis have absolutely no concept of time.
I think it has been a very very rare incident where I arrived to meet someone at the time specified (or even later) and didn't have to wait a bit.
I remember there was one function that I was supposed to attend that started at 6, and I got there late, around 6:30. I was a bit worried until I realised that absolutely nobody else had arrived yet. The staff where the event was being hosted thought I was there to inspect it, so they showed me around everywhere to "prove" that everything is good. Later the event hosts chided me for coming so early, saying "This is Pakistan!".
This is also very true for weddings. If a wedding invites you to come at 8pm, you'd be an incredible fool to show up before 10pm, and even then it'd be likely you'll have to wait an hour or so before the bride or groom show up. Thankfully, there have been regulations put in place that coincidentally happen to curb this- commercial areas with a certain power consumption (such as wedding/party halls) and are required to stop after a specific time (usually 12am or 10pm), so everyone has to hurry to finish before then.

Might be something ingrained in the culture...after all, the urdu word for "tomorrow" and the word for "yesterday" is the same :D.
Wow some great information there. Yeah I can imagine it being a big problem if you are a store owner. Here I got annoyed when people didn't leave five minutes before closure.

I've seen the exact opposite. I've seen many South Indians look down on North Indians and none of the North Indian people I met talked about my lack of knowledge in Hindi.

Have you visited Kerala? If you think people from Tamil Nadu are too proud, you'll be shocked. And people from Kerala in general tend to be very low expecting from non-Keralites. In my experience people from Tamil Nadu are much more modest and friendly than in Kerala.

Also, I've always felt groups and social interactions are very different. In Kerala you don't interact with the public in general without a group of friends, and in many cases, people just don't speak at all until they see someone they know. I've seen people wander around a bus stand for 5+ minutes until asking for directions, but they'll be bubbling a soon as they have someone they know with them. I've also seen very different interactions between rickshaw drivers. In Kerala they just park on a line and talk to eachother until someone shows up to hire them and always the first parked rickshaw will get the passenger. Like, if you ask someone at the back of the line they'll point to you to go to the front. While I've visited Karnataka, I haven't yet seen the drivers fight over who gets the passenger. Kinda weird. How is it where you live?
I dont know if this is just me or if it simply is the truth, but many of us germans can start an argument out of anything.
Its so bothersome. :/

Worst traits of Denmark:
Blatant racism - even from politicians and the media - and selfishness, even to the point of not wanting to help the refugees, trying to prevent them from coming to our country, and worsening their conditions hoping they'll leave. It's despicable, but at least I think a great deal of the population - probably even the majority - does not agree at all. But the state and many of the politicians do it anyway.

I suspect the racism is partly a result of our colonial/imperialist history, and attempting to justify the wars the state participates in, without the support of the people.

Good thread!

vicklemos: This is me after reading this :P
Jeesu...who does that ?

I did looked for other words, like fussy, finicky...but anal-retentive gives the best impression of what I really think of this kind of person.

Elmofongo: Isn't this inherited to all Iberian Penninsula descended peoples?
At first I thought this was a Latin American thing, I've lived with Brazilians. However the Chileans and Argentinians I've met were much more conservative.
