mechmouse: Valve and in an extension Steam, exists as it does due to the whim of 1 man. That man until recently was 1 burger away from from doing a full Elvis. It's his life time you need to consider.
Just want to emphasize the "until recently". Gabe's been looking good for the past few years. This is a pic from 7 years ago, I'd imagine he looks even better now. I wonder if billions help you slim faster, but good for him either way!!

Kelefane: Its safe to assume that for as long as Computers and gamers are around, Steam will always be around right along with them. Steam isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Definitely not in our life time.
I think you're on the wrong website to sell that vision.

Personally, I start feeling somewhat comfortable when we're talking about a international not for profit organisation, ideally officially backed by several nation states.

Anything less than that is a gamble in term of persistence for me (even the above is not a guarantee, but I think its about as much of a guarantee as we can possibly aspire to in this world).

I'd really like to convince several governments that giving gamers permanent access to games (everything they purchased plus every game that is part of the public domain) is an important consideration, but I don't think we're anywhere near that.

For now, I have my home backup + GOG. Once GOG is gone, I'll have to figure out how to get redundancy. Maybe I'll get some of that more affordable glacier storage in AWS or something.

With the user base that gog has today it is impossible for it to disappear.
i know that i have separate offline installers for such an occasion.
