I need some help sorting out the specs required for the WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT vs what my son’s computer currently has. See required specs below.
Minimum system requirements - Windows:
OS: 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
Processor: Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3 GHz or AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940
Memory: RAM 6 GB
Graphics: Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 660 / AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870
Hard Drive: 35 GB of available space
DirectX: 11

Additional requirements: Requires file system support for files up to 8 GB.
Recommended system requirements - Windows:
OS: 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
Processor: Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3.4 GHz / AMD CPU AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
Memory: RAM 8 GB
Graphics: Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 770 / AMD GPU Radeon R9 290
Hard Drive: 35 GB of available space
DirectX: 11

My son’s computer is an i3 blah blah blah with a basic video card. I plan to upgrade his video card to a Geforce GTX 1060 6GB Turbo Edition.
My thinking here is that with a higher end video card, that should overcome the i3 vs i5 issue.
Is that a safe assumption or will the game not run due to his processor being an i3?
Thanks for your help.

While the graphics card will undoubtedly help a lot, you may find the slower processor might bottleneck the game logic (such as PC and NPC movement).

My sons AMD CPU is technically bellow spec, but with a more powerful GFX card so I can try and test it tomorrow.
The i3 is dual core only if I remember right. I think you need at least a quad core processor. You can get the 1060 but it's not a guarantee. Still you can afterwards upgrade the CPU if needed.
I'd guess it depends on which generation of i3 it is... There is a thread in Witcher 3 subforum where people are saying that it runs fine with it.

Assuming the mother board supports a better CPU. :)

Good to know - do you have a link to the thread before I go digging around for it?

I don't have an i3, but I do have a below specc i5. I always thought I'd be okay if I upgrade my GPU but I wouldn't mind seeing some hands on impressions (obviously I'm not going to be trying to play the thing at 4K, but I'd like to know if I'd be able to crank up the bells and whistles with smoother performance at 1080P on a modest sized monitor).

Will the game run on an AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE / HD7850 2GB / 8 GB RAM combo ?
Wait is your son mature enough for Bitcher 3 - Wild Cunts? Because it have lots of dirty wenches (or portray all women as such).

I bought the cheapest Steam Machine and it could play Witcher 3 very smoothly in low graphic. Intel Core i3 4130T Dual Core & GeForce 750ti / 860M 2GB.

My laptop with a mobile Core i7 4th gen and GTX960M can run it at medium graphic, 40-50fps.

It's not a first person shooter so high frame rates is less important. I turned off a lot of the post processing anyway because they make the game look worse.

Daughter has played it on a 6core Phenom with a 7870 and it worked ok.

But i3 should support HT, so it "is" also a quad-core. ;)
Thanks all....I think I will proceed and if it is a problem, will change out the cpu
Witcher 3 is actually very well optimized. I have an Athlon II 640 with 8 gigs of RAM and an ancient Radeon HD 7700 and it runs very well on med-high.

These days sys specs are like best-by-dates on cans of food. They're not hard and fast rules so much as loose guidelines. These days there's a lot more wiggle room for compatibility and performance.
if it's a desktop I3 and generation 4 or newer i guess you should be fine

Sorry, can't post links, don't have enough rep. But it is easily googleable, just enter "witcher 3 i3 gog" in google and it is the first result.
