ariaspi: It's recommended to download the Galaxy free installers, by selecting More and then choosing Classic installers.
paladin181: Recommended by whom? Just because you don't want the client, you shouldn't push your opinion on others like there's something dreadfully wrong with it.It would be better to inform new people if they prefer to not have the client, here's how you get rid of that instead of phrasing it like "that's bad for you. use this instead."
Oh, thanks for the correction!
EDIT:
Because, apparently, some of my posts seem to get misinterpreted lately, I'll try and reformulate a clearer answer to this post too.
paladin181: Recommended by whom?
I would say any regular member here or any sane person with decent computer skills. But hey, that's just me! What do I know?!
So, there are basically three scenarios involving Galaxy and the installers:
1. One is already using Galaxy, so there's no point in downloading/keeping an installer with extra 120 MB. Even Galaxy is smart enough to download the classic installers, not the bundled ones.
2. One does not want to use Galaxy, so there's no point in downloading/keeping an installer with extra 120 MB of bloatware.
3. One does not know about Galaxy (most likely a new user) and when they manage to access the download page of their game, there is a big button that stands out, suggesting to try out Galaxy. Here are a few possibilities:
*a. the user decides to try Galaxy - whether they like it or not, is not our concern anymore because it was their conscious decision.
*b. the user is on the download page of a game which IS NOT bundled with Galaxy and is not curious to try it out, or doesn't see it, and if they stick with GOG, they'll found out about Galaxy eventually.
*c. the user is on the download page of a game which IS bundled with Galaxy and is not curious to try it out, or doesn't see it, but downloads the bundled installer without knowing it, ending up with: c1. most likely an outdated version of Galaxy and liking it, but still wasting time to update to the latest one; c2. possibly the latest version and liking it; c3. any version of Galaxy and not liking it, but also being frustrated for having software installed without their permission and all the unpleasantries that come when dealing with bloatware/crapware/PUP (all terms being appropriate in this case).
paladin181: It would be better to inform new people if they prefer to not have the client
Yes, it would. But my conversation with the OP was in quick succession and he was about to finish his download when I noticed the bundled installers in his folder. So I quickly made the screenshot with the classic installers and pushed my opinion on him, not thinking about the
consequences. Also, from my understanding, he was already aware of Galaxy's existence and some of its functions, before I pushed my opinion on him.
paladin181: ...here's how you get rid of that instead of phrasing it like "that's bad for you. use this instead."
That's more like you putting words into my mouth. Recommending something doesn't automatically mean the other things are bad.
TL;DR:
Unless someone wants to keep multiple outdated copies of Galaxy, for God knows what reasons, I fail to see how is beneficial for anyone to download the default Galaxy bundled installers. Bundling Galaxy in the installers was an extremely terrible idea - my belief (not pushed on opinion) is that all regular members know this, and even those who use/love Galaxy agree on it.
