Says that it is free. Don't own any xboxes so that's a bit of a shame, but already own it on PC, so that's alright (haven't yet started playing it though).

Edit3: More countries added, well everyone but Japan can now get it free now.
**Free download of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is available in all markets excluding Japan. The giveaway is from January 21 (6 a.m. PST) through February 5 (12 a.m. UTC). -- http://news.xbox.com/2016/01/21/xbox-one-backward-compatibility-january/
Edit:

yyahoo: Caught this on IGN. Here are the regions where it is free:

"Microsoft also notes that in “select regions,” players can download The Witcher 2 for free until February 5. Those select regions are the US, Canada, UK, France and Germany."

Now would connecting and being forced to update the Xbox, download the game and get a bunch of ads on my 360 that it's happily blank of right now be worth the price of getting TW2 which i already got on PC... Tough decision...

now would buying a xbox 360
hook it up
update it
create a xbox live account
find out i need a gold account to get this for "free" and then deal with all the bloody ads and nagware as my xbox is online be worth the price of admission for a game i already got on here for free during a summer sale ?

gee i dont know
What ads are you people talking about? Is that specific to the game or do you mean the gold subscription? I'm a long time Xbox 360 owner and have never been nagged by ads.

There's always ads on the Home page, down on the bottom-right hand side of the Landing Window, even for users who pay the subscription >.<

I've never really noticed that. Isn't it just game recommendations?

Nope - Movie trailers, advertisements for Cadbury's, you name it.

Maybe it's regional, but I've never gotten such ads, either when I was on gold subscription or now that I'm not.

Dunno - I've experienced them in Germany, Ireland and Poland (my 360 is very well-travelled :P).

Not doubting you, but just to prove that I'm not insane, this is my home screen.

The xbox port is a great edition for console gamers but playing it after doing so on PC is like going backwards. It feels a bit odd.

Are the bottom two tabs on the right always grey for you?

Yes.
EDIT: I'm not sure if those were the same tabs, but I think they used to promote games down right in a previous update. Not other ads though, never something other than games. But they're always grey now anyway.

I don't think it's free in the UK
