Det_Bullock: My advice is don't play it with the default over the shoulder camera, play it with the top-down camera zooming as far put as possible, the combat is way better that way as you can have a better idea of where all the enemies are and which style to adopt.
I noticed, especially when whole groups of them.

Like this game is clearly made for that top down camara in games like Neverwinter Nights, heck there is an option to highlight names over everthing like NPC and doors clearly showcasing the game was being made with the camara in that way in mind.

Heck this game so far feels very Bioware-ish in some aspects.

drealmer7: nope, that doesn't make it old, not even relatively
10 years is not a long time in the gaming world, at all
What are you smoking? A decade old game isn't old? Do you realize how much can change in 10 years?

drealmer7: DON'T BOTHER

there are SO MANY better games to play, the social pressure to play the witcher to know wtf ppl are talking about is not worth it - if it is not for you, don't feel like it should be
I agree with this a lot. Don't make yourself play a game just because "everyone" is playing it. I have no interest in the entire Witcher trilogy, and won't be giving it a single try in any lifetime. However, the Witcher adventure game caught my attention, and I think it's worth checking out if you aren't into in the RPG main.

And, playing things in full order, while it's a general good idea, is not entirely a must. I enjoyed Bioware's Dragon Age series. By which I started playing from Dragon age 2, went right on to Dragon age inquisition, and never looked back. (It was the same with Baldur's Gate. I started from BG2) I felt no urge to tackle the first game in the series. Stuff I'm curious about or had questions, I just looked up the wikia for the lore.

It IS made on the Aurora engine, albeit a heavily modified version.

It seems there is some contingent of people who don't like people discussing games on this gaming forum.

(At the time of this post, the OP is not low rated, for the record.)

But since you haven't played it, you can't really know what people are writing about :-)
Personally I thought the combat system really was too simplistic...if you're coming from something like the Baldur's Gate games (let alone hardcore titles like Age of decadence), it honestly feels somewhat dumb imo. Mostly quite easy...but then suddenly you get some frustrating fights (really disliked those stupid elven and dwarfish rebels).
And the story was just over-ambitious...they tried really hard to create a complex world without clear good and evil, but for me it didn't quite work in the end.
It's still an entertaining game though, just not quite as good as one might expect from the hype.
On many accounts I prefer the 1st to the later opus (opii ? opuses ?). I don't like streamlined games : you played one, you played all of them. Witcher 1 is a unique experience.

Just because there are far older games does not mean graphics stopped improving over the last decade. That's like saying that a movie from the 50's isn't old and it's visuals are no different then in modern movies, because there are movies 30 years older still, black & white and with no sound.

I hate combat in Baldur's gate. That real time implementation of D&D rules makes my brain hurt, like looking to long at an M.C. Esher picture.

OF COURSE GRAPHICS ARE GOING TO IMPROVE and continue to - but the differences aren't that big, seriously

what the hell are you people even looking at?!?!?!?! I SWEAR people need to stop drinking the municipal waters

like, this doesn't even make any sense, it's like you have no sense of gaming OR movie history, BUT YOU DO, so, again, LAY OFF THE CRACK AND CHEMICAL WATER

Yeah, it's totally us who are acting irrational :D Just look at my first post- I'm not saying that Witcher is like Ultima 3. In fact, I'm saying the visuals still hold up pretty well in my opinion. Just that they are nevertheless a decade old, and that should be taken into account when judging them today.
