Time to give this one a bit of love on the main:
WipEout should be on GOG!
I realise the 3rd party licensed music is a problem but the original PC release already did away with that and CoLD SToRAGE dominates this one anyway, check out Messij https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uQnXvRndcE

If not this then get us WipEout 2097! It plays better
Although the trouble is 3rd party licensed tracks really dominate this time around, and would be missed - check out these samples:
The Future Sound of London - Landmass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGtg2fQOWBw
Fluke - Atom Bomb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQqHTttWBlk

Guess I'll go back to emulation, but the hope remains...

Nah, Wip3out was the shit!

Music licencing is likely a minor issue compared to the contracts with the likes of The Designer's Republic (far as I know something went south there at some point).

Still, BallisticNG might be a realistic thing if you want a solid game designed to be as similar as possible.
(its pretty damned good too - though of course missing those big licences in the music etc).

Psygnosis = Sony = dream on.

It's absolute abandonware like the entire Psygnosis catalogue.

Well.. a few years ago I'd agree completely but these days PlayStation Studios has it's own Steam page and sells the likes of Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us over there

So their attitude to bringing stuff to PC in general has definitely changed, the second part is getting them to give a damn about their back catalog though ,I guess...

But when they do.. .Lemmings WTF yo!

Yeah, not happening. As far as Sony is concerned, it's theirs, and still an active property. There was an entry as recently as 2021.

yeah a lazy mobile game they made so that they could pretend they still care about the series. the most aaa publisher thing they could possibly do
no chance theyre bringing back wipeout

I loved WipEout's aestethic & music, but for me the game was impossible lol.
A balanced new entry for PC would be cool tho.

Oh I don't say otherwise regarding Wip3out hehe, it's just there never was a PC port so what with hopes already being low for the first two... :P

I didn't realise there may be problems with the contributions by The Designer's Republic... shame if this ends up being yet another obstacle.

Haha thanks for the info, BallisticNG looks fantastic! I am totally getting that!
Great memories!

Would love to see the Wipeout series here. Being an absolute speedfreak I loved all those, including Wipeout, Rollcage, Ballistics, NFS, and Burnout, and the best thing about these early titles was the hypnotic techno/rave/early trance tracks, perfect for getting "in the zone". :D

Kinda hilarious that the "nosebleed" ad for Wipeout 1 was accused of promoting 'E' as it was all over the news in the UK about the rave scene in the late part of the 90s.

In the later years I've noticed many other clones I haven't tried yet, including Pacer, which also features CoLD SToRAGE:

In 2022 the source code for Wipeout got "leaked" so I'm hoping for a proper open source port:

Completely forgot; https://phoboslab.org/wipegame if anyone wants to play the original game (via the web browser).

I love this project and the idea of the creator saying "either put up or shut up" to Sony regarding any C&Ds.

I mean, you could sate your thirst with that WipEout decompilation.

Thanks a lot for the heads up!!
This is really cool indeed. At least WipEout is safe now as far as I'm concerned. Still gotta take care of WipEout 2097 and Wip3out! (and WipEout 64!)
I don't want to start a long rant on the topic of preservation now - one can easily find lots of reading/viewing material on the subject - but damn, we have a long way to go and thank goodness for the high seas!
Just had a go at playing WipEout from the rewritten source code: it's really good, better than the original on Playstation! Not just because of the higher resolution: it controls better, I can compare with the experience I'm having with emulation (using the D-pad of course). Damn, doing Firestar is now a smooth experience!
Now the thing is I did read somewhere someone say that the PC port actually improved the handling (mostly collisions-related, a step toward WipEout 2097), even if everything else was a downgrade compared to the Playstation version. And the leaked source code is from the "Wipeout ATI 3D Rage Edition":

https://phoboslab.org/log/2023/08/rewriting-wipeout

It's a good read but tl;dr: anyone wishing to experience the original game, just go with this https://phoboslab.org/wipegame/

@sanscript: Thanks again for sharing the info!
Nice, thanks.
I'm not sure I understand that remaster tho, did they use higher quality samples than the original tracks? It feels quite similar
