I've lost access to so many of my games now that I've got Windows 8.1 which does not support DirectX 9. How do I get these games to work on my OS, as I've seen so many people running this DirectX on this OS?

Ehm install direct x9.0c? From microsoft.

Every time I tried to do so, I got a message saying "This version of DirectX is not supported by your operating system." or something to that effect.

Anywhere. Then run installer from that folder.
